ages well, and fits in with current political tensions.
with current Brain computer interface progress, this story might not be to far into the fiction, and closer and closer to fact.

I listened to this because I found out Steve Gouldsboro "7th sigma" is loosely based on kiplings original story. I enjoyed both, but 7th Sigma is better.

Story
The bugs showed up about 50 years ago - self-replicating, solar-powered, metal-eating machines. No one knows where they came from. They don't like water, though, so they've stayed in the desert Southwest. The territory. People still live here, but they do it without metal. Log cabins, ceramics, what plastic they can get that will survive the sun and heat. Technology has adapted, and so have the people.

Story
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

so far, better than Renegade Star.
Reviewed: 07-28-23
Very similar plot and main two character development to his Renegade Star series. I only just finished the first book, but I think this series is better, in that the characters are more believable and make fewer "stupid choices just to move the plot along" than in the authors earlier series.
if you liked his earlier series, I would highly recommend this one too.

Story
Renegade Star: Publisher's Pack 2 contains books 3 and 4 of the Renegade Star series. Renegade Moon, Book 3. A Renegade never surrenders. After evading both the Union and the Sarkonian Empire, Jace and the crew are off in search of Earth. With the help of Titan, their new base of operations, Jace believes they might just have a chance. That is, if they can outrun the two armies at their backs, and somehow manage to survive a galaxy that wants them dead. Not exactly a walk in the park. But no one ever said being a Renegade was easy.

Story
Jace Hughes is a Renegade. That means taking almost any job that comes his way, no matter the situation. So long as he can keep his ship floating, he's free to live the life he wants. But that all changes when he meets Abigail Pryar, a nun looking for safe passage out of the system. Too bad there's something off about the cargo she's carrying. Jace knows he shouldn't ask too many questions, but when strange sounds start coming from inside the large, metal box, he can't help but check it out. Big mistake. To make matters worse, he's being pursued by unknown ships - who want that cargo.

The overall story is great. Like someone mixed Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate Atlanis/SGU into a trashy space opera.
The bad parts are the main character is a strategic moron, who survives every encounter only because of plot armor.
and the entire society apparently incapable of learning to fix gaping holes in station security and docking ports, and incompetent se unity personel.
This is a fun read, but only in the same way a trashy romance novel is a welcome escape from reality. I read the first two books for free, and I would give them a one star, except that I liked it enough to buy the second two books as a discounted package.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

The story of the young sociologist who studied a Chicago crack-dealing gang from the inside captured the world's attention when it was first described in Freakonomics. Gang Leader for a Day is the fascinating full story of how Sudhir Venkatest managed to gain entree into the gang, what he learned, and how his method revolutionized the academic establishment.
