M. R. Carey's Rampart Trilogy is "an epic post-apocalyptic fable" (Kirkus), set in a future where nature has turned against us. Now, in the breathtaking final chapter, the world that was lost comes back to haunt those who survived - as Koli's journey comes to its astonishing close.

Contrary to some of the other reviews, I did not find this last book in the trilogy to be any less than the other two books. I did like the first book best but all three books has been excellent!

Story
In the absolutely packed Act II, the dark fantasy resumes and the Sandman expands into the French Revolution, ancient Rome, 19th-century San Francisco, eighth-century Baghdad, and beyond. New and familiar characters abound, voiced by a bright mix of performers, including Kat Dennings, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Michael Sheen, Kristen Schaal, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Wright, and so many more, including fan-favorite narrators Simon Vance and Ray Porter.

Love Neil Gaiman but
Reviewed: 10-20-21
I love Neil Gaimans stories and storytelling but the sandman series are a strange mix of a main story followed by some short stories.
Maybe I just don't like short stories in general.

Story
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Far from Circe
Reviewed: 11-15-20
I actually started with Circe, which I found exceptionally spot on. Delightful, mellow and perfectly balanced. This book, Song of Achilles, was not really to my liking. I guess I should have read the intro and reviews but I too excited after Circe, so I didn't. The book was simply too much of a love story between the two main characters. I don't really mind homo erotica but a book full of it made me full of it, so to speak.

To make the experiment work, they just need one last recruit: an ageing schoolteacher whose late mother was the foremost expert on the mathematics of paradox. 2028: A young woman goes into surgery for routine brain surgery.

Unreliable characters blended with bad reading
Reviewed: 11-28-19
Had this novella not been only 4 hours, I would not have gotten through it.
The story is alright, I guess... kind of. But the characters and their actions and motivations are utterly untrustworthy.
The performance/reading of Natasha Soudek is bad. Unlike some other reviewers I like her heavy Russian accent since almost all characters are Russian including the main character. BUT she sound like a robot with absolutely no feeling of the story. No pauses where needed and hard to hear difference between the characters.

What a great sequel
Reviewed: 11-18-19
I simply love the books from Derek Kunsken. The stories are well crafted and in my opinion they are a perfect mix of technical sci-fi and a colourful gallery of persons. I was worried if Derek could pull of a worthy sequel to a fantastic book (The quantum magician) but that worry was put to shame. What an excellent follow up with a new story that was adequately separate from the first book. I hope there will be a third!

Story
Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.

Just perfect

I've not read/listened much to techy sci-fi (much other sci-fi though). This book was the perfect way into that universe. Great story with lots of fantastical ideas about the future of humanity and so many nerdy details that I just loved.
The performance of T. Ryder was simply just amazing. At first I found his voice a bit too much, but throughout the book he gave the narrative the final touch. Damn impressive!

One of the most pleasant stories I've heard in a long time. The fairy tale genre is (to my surprise) excellent for adults and I enjoyed the book from start to end.
As always Neil Gaiman both writes and performs to perfection.

Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Story
Our ancestors crossed deserts, mountains, and oceans without even a whisper of what anyone today might consider modern technology. Those feats of endurance now seem impossible in an age where we take comfort for granted. But what if we could regain some of our lost evolutionary strength by simulating the environmental conditions of our forbears? Investigative journalist and anthropologist Scott Carney takes up the challenge to find out: Can we hack our bodies and use the environment to stimulate our inner biology?

Extremely interesting topic. I've begun exposing myself to the cold environment after reading this book.
Some of the chapters were less interesting to me and I had a little trouble deciphering what the author actually wanted to tell. In the end it all became clear (although I still think some of the chapters were a bit off topic).
All in all, a really good book.
