About this listen

The breathtaking debut from acclaimed short story writer Derek Kunsken

Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.

One of the many things I like about Audible is the Daily Deal - a daily selection at a deeply discounted price. I buy books on the Daily Deal that I never would have heard of otherwise - it’s a fun way to find something new.

The Quantum Magician was a lucky find - a Daily Deal that was pure gold! I was intrigued by the description and started listening right away - and then couldn’t stop. It’s a future con game with characters that are so fascinating that their personalities alone would carry almost any story. A brilliant con man puts together a team of misfits for an epic con - and you never know what his end game really is as he spins a different story for each member of the crew. The crew consists of various mutations of humans- some hardly recognizable - and all with their own agenda. The narrator does a stellar job of bringing the variety of characters to life and the different voices are perfect.

Highly recommended if you like a tale that is both unique and familiar- a con game where even the listener is fooled - in the best way possible. Five stars all around!

A 5 Star Score from the Daily Deal!

half the battle in the books I listen to are the narrator and this one doesn't do a very good job I had to speed it up one and a half times just to keep interested also the story just starts off with a bunch of stuff going on that you really don't know how you got to that point from the characters to the different races it's very confusing unless I missed the book somewhere in between I thought this was the first one of the series and I started off way behind the 8-ball I feel like the characters and everything going on could have been explained a lot easier let me trying to figure it out and you could have gave the reader a cup of coffee or 3/4 you let him get behind the mic

drops you in a world where nothing's explained

A great read! Brought complicated concepts to foundational understanding while weaving a fantastic story! Highly Recommend.

Fantastic SciFi

This book was impressive. It’s a bit heavy in the beginning and took a bit to get into. But once you start to understand what’s going on it pulls you in and then pulls you all the way in. The narration was kind of weird first but once you get used to it, it’s great.

Fantastic book all around.

An absolute original gem

Sort of a sci-fi version of Ocean's 11. Though I would have enjoyed it much more if they didn't have all the warped puppet scenes. I think the author must have been traumatized by puppets as a kid or something.

What's with the puppets?

Quantum mechanics + Space Heist, you got me there.
If you know some basic quantum mechanics and enjoy the subject, you may find this book quite interesting if only for those bits. But its also a space heist, if you like heists, this is a classic one. Loves also the themes on religion, slavery and morals sprinkled throughout the book.
Getting the next one right away.

The Quantum Magician is not for everyone and that is why it is perfect for me! After hearing so many so called Sci-Fi books that end up being G.I. Joe in space along comes Belasarius, the Homo Quantus , a genetically modified Human who's brain is equal to a Quantum computer and more, Bel travels the galaxy recruiting a number of other genetically modified beings for a logic defying mission. The assembled characters are like no others in any book I know of and the narrator does a fine job giving them each their own voice (Gates15 sounds like M Emmet Walsh). The book is full of hard science that at times could be confusing but the author does a good job not letting you lose the gist of what's happening and the end wants you wanting for more.

A Stand Alone Sci-Fi

This book pushes the limits of modern sci-fi. It does to the current reader what The Time Machine does for the late 19th Century reader. The author portrays a beautiful adventure/romance through the fantastic lenses of quantum physics and genetic engineering.

(Not so) Simply Beautiful

H. G. Wells of this era!

The best way to describe this science fiction series is, hardcore with no sex. I generally read space opera, which is basically soft core sci fi with erotic fantasies. "The Quantum Magician" is quite different. There is no sex or eroticism, but yet I found myself being aroused from the vast detail of this universe. I enjoyed the past 13 hours of letting my thoughts float into the worm hole and I can't wait for the sequel.
