Evan Smoak is a man with skills, resources, and a personal mission to help those with nowhere else to turn. He’s also a man with a dangerous past. Chosen as a child, he was raised and trained as an Orphan, an off-the-books black box program designed to create the perfect deniable intelligence asset: An assassin. Evan was Orphan X - until he broke with the program and used everything he learned to disappear. But now someone is on his tail.

The depth of character we come to associate with Orphan X.
Reviewed: 02-21-25
I like how the author brings you right to the edge of catastrophe for Orphan X, before he is whipped away from it through sheer force of will. He also lives by a code of conduct and honor that makes us eager to root for his successfully navigating his challenges and obstacles. He gives us a character that we want to believe in. I’m particularly pleased that his mission is to help the underdog, that individual that often seems to be out of options. He is a capable, confident operator whose actions are motivated by a powerful desire to make a positive difference for good in our society. To make a difference one person at a time. He is a “be part of the solution, not part of the problem” kind of guy! As the reader, I enjoy thrillers packed with near nonstop action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. That’s exactly what I experienced with this novel, and what makes me very eager to get u hands on the next volume in the Orphan X series. I hope you too will find yourself teleported right into the middle of all the action, wracking your brain for the very best solution to the current problem, while thinking ahead with possible options to resolve situations as they unfold.

Character matters, and this story brings that out in bold relief. Told with wonderful storytelling and great plot twists and turns, this book makes one reflect on one’s on character and how one would handle the situations presented to the main character. I cried and laughed and hip hip hoorayed during this one! Great story!

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Story
Robert Fagles brings the energy of contemporary language of this 2,700-year-old epic, while maintaining the drive and metric music of Homer's poetry, as well as the impact and nuance of Homer's mesmerizing repeated phrases.
As a scholar, Fagles praises Homer's directness and simplicity, the breadth of his imagination, and the power of his song. As a translator, he brilliantly captures these very qualities.

This is a classic rendition of an important tale.
The performance is wonderful! The issue I have is that this is abridged from the actual text and I was not aware of this.
Other than this important note, this is a wonderful book!
