About this listen

Elnora Comstock lives with her widowed mother at the edge of Limberlost Swamp. Her mother is harsh and critical of her daughter, but Elnora is a loving girl who befriends all creatures. She is especially drawn to the beautiful moths that flutter through the trees in Limberlost. Although Elnora longs to go to high school, she has no money to pay for tuition and books. When her cruel mother refuses to help, all seems lost, until Elnora learns she can sell the rare insects she collects. Still, her journey through high school and college will be full of challenges - and surprises. First published in 1909, Gene Stratton-Porter’s classic tale is a marvelous lesson in the powers of compassion and determination. Whether you remember this book from your childhood, or are meeting it for the first time, Elnora’s shining personality will capture your heart. Her gentle spirit is conveyed in each sentence by narrator Christina Moore.

A Girl of the Limberlost was my late mother's favorite book when she was young and she often urged me to read it, but I don't recall having done so before or it would have left an indelible memory. The beauty of the prose, the ethereal descriptions of the Limberlost, and the unforgettable characters are brought to vivid color by Christina Moore's wonderful narration. I enjoyed listening to this audible so much I went in search of a vintage first edition hardback. I found one that looks just like my mother's copy. Thank you audible for the reviving this beautiful classic. My mother would have loved listening.

How bravely honest and innocent. These displays of true character in such a “sunrise pastel” and “gentle nature” kind of way. It’s like looking over a beautiful scene of nature that makes you feel still and small but in a book. I loved this so much.

Gently Wonderous

The first time I read this was about 50 years ago. As a pre-teen this was a beautiful book. I found it in an old box of books left behind by the people who lived in the house before us. I love this book and always will. Elnora is a wonderful example of a young lady confronting hardship and heartbreak who simply continues onward with determination and unfailing love. Heartwarming and simple story of life as it is.

An old-fashioned good story that makes you laugh and cry and enjoy great storytelling with beautiful language. I’ve missed books like this! So nice to come back “home” to a book like this.

Sit back and enjoy!

Reminded us of Anne Shirley mixed with the Pride & Prejudice scene where Lady Catherine confronts Lizzie. But Billy was the best.

Great book, I enjoyed it very much and my 17yr old daughter is currently listening and loving it too. good morals, values, can't think of any negatives. generally good for all ages, though above younger kids. so enjoyable I am trying to decide on my next listen by this author! performance good too- nothing noteworthy good or bad, you just get sucked into the story, which i think is the way it should be!

Great enjoyable book

For a family in the mode of a classical education, this book supports many of the activities encouraged by our curriculum like nature walks.

Also, the strong characters here make the story interesting as it develops and give us examples to admire and be inspired by.

A surprising gem of a book
