Story
Desaray, a normal 14 year old girl, living a normal life. Her everyday life suddenly changed when the world as she knew it ceased to exist. Her world, but not her world. Monsters appearing out of nowhere. 90% of the population disappeared. An apocalypse like none other. A system gained from killing a single monster. Once human, now a dragon... All of these things happening all at the same time, turning Desaray's world upside down. How will she cope in this new world, not as a human but as a dragon?

Sooooo weirdly trained (EMT, Martial Arts, Perfect Student, Cook, and Video Game enthusiast) FOURTEEN YEAR OLD, adopted and raised by a single father who's an EMT in New York, lives on the 20th floor and attends a private school with her elitist friends.
Stuff goes sideways, monsters appear in Manhattan, people screaming, people dying, etc. Young Miss rises to the occasion! Huzzah! Accept the part where her and her friends bully the only boy who had a realistic reaction to being goddamn terrified. Oh, and this bullying is up to and includes murder threats. Was the boy a little whiner? Absolutely! But I'm not sure that gives the mean girl trio the right to just freaking off him in an alley.
The next dumpster fire thrown onto our sea of burning car tires, is she finds dad! Yay! An actual adult with a fully formed prefrontal cortex and a lifetime of experience in a fast paced, sometimes dangerous, field!
Yeeeeeah, this late thirties to early forties grown azz man decides to abjugate all authority to his 14yo cause "she knows more bout video games".
Looooong review short. if you want a quick story that has a little interesting monster madness and a whole Lotta WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU!? This will tied you over 👍

Story
Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon. Survival horror. One of the most brutal, most terrifying full-immersion games ever made. A place where fantasy characters such as elves and dwarves clash with technology, where giant monsters roam the hills, entrusted with protecting the gates of heaven from the demons who would tear it all down. A game where one plays the last of the battlefield surgeons: a healer tasked with keeping the behemoths alive at all costs. But on this server, they don't care about the game. They've come because of the game's most unique feature: full pain.

I don't normally write reviews, Audible doesn't seem to want to actually post them 🤔
However after listening to this one, I promised my wife, I'd try to check on the author.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the story. Sooooo messed up in all the right ways. But with that said,
Matt, you ok buddy?

While his strength has vastly increased since his last encounter with Magnus Cadence, Corin knows that he’ll need every trick at his disposal—and maybe a few new ones—if he wants to survive a duel with his father intact. While Corin struggles with his family, his friends must face a second year at Lorian Heights with new classes, familiar but new chancellor, and deadly new enemies both on and off the campus.

Like some of my other reviewers, the privilege driven plot in this one did make me cringe a hair but to me it didn't detract from the story at all. Its probably just made me wince cause born privilege, as a cis gendered white dude, is something that's hard for me to see.
(ie Korin, spelling?, was becoming strong even without the "secret training techniques of the rich, AND everyone with an attunement are already the elite privileged. You think Mara's parents give a resh if House Greg levels up faster than House Chad? Feels kinda like old rich dudes fighting over tax breaks while the dirt farmers farm dirt 🤷♂️)
Regardless of art attempting to cast light on politics, which, ya know, historically art does, I absolutely loved this next chapter in the Arcane Ascension series. My biggest complaints are that it felt too short, was hoping for more fun schoolroom situations in semester 2, and eventually my hope is that we'll get a book where the main character will get to take on enemies that can't just outright kill him with an errant look or a particularly wet sneeze.
Hang in there Arbiter, some day lol
as always, thank you Mr. Rowe, for sharing this wonderful world with us ❤️

It's possible my dislike is because I've already heard this book in the non Graphic Audio version, and hearing the voice of Rogier from the Demon Cycle as Kip tossed me but I feel like this run just didn't hold up to Simon Vance. The way Vance portrays the cocky condescension of Gavin and the heart breaking self loathing of Kip just couldn't be topped by the Graphic Audio crew, sorry guys. If your looking for a good weird Graphic Audio, check out the Golgotha series as its fantastic. If your looking for the Lightbringer series, stick to Simon.

Love the series even if it's a little childish. Big fan of the hard system regarding magic. Dont understand characters aversion to one shot items though...
