Publisher's summary

A private server. A digital playground. An alliance of the world's most sadistic, most depraved minds. A place to bring their prey, to hone their skills.

Kaiju: Battlefield Surgeon. Survival horror. One of the most brutal, most terrifying full-immersion games ever made. A place where fantasy characters such as elves and dwarves clash with technology, where giant monsters roam the hills, entrusted with protecting the gates of heaven from the demons who would tear it all down.

A game where one plays the last of the battlefield surgeons: a healer tasked with keeping the behemoths alive at all costs.

But on this server, they don't care about the game. That's not why they're here. They've come because of the game's most unique feature: full pain. Realistic anatomy. The ability to bring their victims well beyond the body's normal breaking point. And most importantly, the ability to bring them back and do it all over again.

Trapped in a bloody, merciless nightmare, Duke only has one goal: to survive. And in order to survive, he must play the game. He must win the game. And to do that, he must become the most cruel, most ruthless monster of them all.

Graphic and Enjoyable

Real rating 4.5/5

I enjoyed this book. The initial setup is totally different from any other LitRPG I've come across and I love it. I really appreciated the unique game world, and curious promise behind the game (trying to keep monsters healthy to fight and save the world). The only thing I didn't like about the writing was one section of the book that could be described as physical torture porn. It didn't do anything for me and just kind of made me want to move on to the next section of the story.

Narration was mostly good, but the narrator messed up pronunciation of several words which was annoying and pulled me out of the listen. Sometimes it was just like... "are you trying to say automaton? because that's not how it's pronounced." The strangest (and most subtle) mistake was "Donkey" which was spoken as "Dolkey" or "Dolnkey" for entire chapters.

It's... not a happy story. Know that going in.

The author seems to like having his characters suffer. It is well written, and absolutely worth reading-- just know that it's not a happy story. The characters make hard choices to survive, and the blurb doesn't lie. In part, they must become hard themselves.

I didn't like it, if I'm being completely honest. A good book, but painful.

A Crazy Ride…

This book has a little something for everyone.

It’s simple, complex, disgusting, touching and moments of disturbing morbid mindsets.
It’s hard to rate with book as it’s got some very uncomfortable moment but I understand that’s the point. I’ll say this not a book for the average LitRPG reader that want something lovable, just hard edges found here. This maybe not ever the average horror fan… a free moment closest to SAW type psychological and visual Horror. Not for the faint of heart.

I think it was smart to make this a One-shot book, as I’m sure only Fans of Dominion Blades & Dungeon Crawler Carl (the authors other series) would seek this book out unless they know for sure what they’re purchasing. I’m not squeamish often but there were grotesque and chilling scene in the book and I understand that was the point, I knew what I was getting into with this purchase, even than I was a bit surprised how I mentally rejected and was put off by scenes.

The Reader/Voice actor did a better than average job… I knew about the other version of this series by Jeff Hayes but I wanted one single reader on purpose… I won’t be re-purchasing but I had kind of wish I would have just gotten the Soundbooth version.

Great work, if/when I re-listen I will most likely skip the really F***ed up parts.

Am I still sane, cause I really liked it!

I purchased this book because I love anime and seen the word Kaiju and didnt read further, didn't listen to a sample either..I must say I never listened to a book like this and I have an extensive library. I write reviews for the books I deem worthy, and this was.
At first my eyes would glaze over and I would fade out, not listening, it was just too much, so it took me a few weeks to finish this book. There was nothing good in this story, from the MCs real lives to full immersion VR. This book blew my mind, from the f'd up characters to the monsters. I mean twisted beyond belief, it came to the point where you ask yourself out loud. what the hell am I listening to. The scenes that unfolded were mind blowing. I want to give more detail but ya know, spoilers!. I must say though, impregnating that donkey!!! lmaooo. see what I mean, I should be ashamed for laughing. This book made my skin crawl, gaggy, scared, shocked and awed.I freaked out quite a few times. I was repeatedly asked, " why are you just standing in the middle of the floor staring with your mouth hanging open. That being said, there were heart touching moments, though very few, but timing was on point, then they would be snatched away. It is a hard book to listen to. okay. Joe Hempel, I never heard of him, his voice was perfect, I never got the characters mixed up, think I'm gonna call him the Cybil of narration from now on. Dinnamin your mind is a scary, twisted place, with all due respect. when I finally finished it I had to just lie here and think, or not think, I believe I was in shock. It is damn good writing and narration and I will repeatedly listen to this book. I have to re-listen to the parts that I faded out on. I just have one question..what genre would this type of book be? horror, grimdark, litrpg, mind f'k. I never dropped the f bomb until listening to this book and I honestly believe that all who listen to this book will too. ok I'm not done..I never liked Clara from the beginning and she got what she deserved though I didn't think he..oops. I loved bastey,?sp? He broke my heart near the end and the poor kids in the ablation room. one last thing, the creatures had names that gave little clue to what they could actually do and what they were made for, again many wtf moments. I dont think there is another author out here like Dinnamin. He deserves props for this.
Hollaaaaaa!!!!! and I'm not ashamed lolol. a little scared of him but not ashamed lolol. I think I earned a tee shirt for finishing this book, just like when you ride the biggest, baddest ride at an amusement park, yeah, an," I survived Kaiju by Matt Dinnamin- tee.

Better than I expected

Looking at the reviews for this book I was expecting something horrible but it honestly wasn’t bad, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the character development.

Breath of fresh air in the litRPG genre

Fantastic world building. Wonderfully flawed characters. Dark, gory, morally reprehensible and I love it.

it's to much

so went in to this story blind. thinking it was going to be another kaiju story. but this story so so messed up. I don't know how to feel about it. the author does not pull his Punches. in a story of a guy going from recovery, to some place much worse. Set in a gory Kaiju lit rpg. the reason I gave this 5 stars is that I would read it again. and the next book.

Yay Genital Mutilation!

Matt Dinniman has some issues with showing vs telling.

Not for that part though.

Not for the multiple chapters in a row all about it.

Fun for the whole family.

Amazing. I laughed and cried. Also CW: torture

More in line with The Grinder than his other books. Grittier. Darker.
(Which is why these two books are in the Horror category. This is NOT the same genre as Dominion of Blades.)
I do not normally read horror, but Dinniman pulled me in.
Wonderful book. A complete package. From gaming mechanics and plot to emotional depth and nuance. Epic battles and horrible choices.
