Good worldbuilding but the underlying message is. Gross

It’s mostly good but it’s really weird how the author waited until the last 10% of the book to introduce a character whose sole explicit purpose is to seduce the 17 year old protagonist. Also weird that the message is “yeah killing all disabled people are bad but ACTUALLY they were right about this one guy he’s like the reincarnated devil.” And the narrator would pronounce things weirdly and it was distracting

God this was such a good concept that could be used to tell an incredible story but unfortunately it fell WAY short. To the point where it seemed like the author didn’t understand what words like “mischief” and “faith” mean despite giving them such a large role in the story. Like we’re told that our protag is intelligent and then he says stuff like “I don’t think the god of mischief would find me freeing the slaves entertaining” as if a complete societal upheaval wouldn’t be mischievous or entertaining for a god of mischief. Theres also slander towards Hellenic and Roman pagans, “spirit animals,” and a part where our protag thinks about how terrifying it would be to temporarily be trans. As a trans reader that was enough to get me to stop reading it tbh. It was weird how the main city’s structure was just copy pasted from Rome, slaves included?? Like u don’t HAVE to include a protag who isn’t anti-slavery but why would u

God it’s boring and so frustrating. BUT the ending is slightly better than the last ending, which was. Somethin’ else. Like in the last book the villain was like “I’m evil and deserve to rule bc I took the risk of being the boss of this company, also it’s all a plutocracy and we manufacture ur consent” and the protag is just like “well I don’t understand those words!!!” Like ZERO pushback not even a “plutocracy is bad maybe that’s unethical!!” Which is wild. Also the protag is just kind of an asshole any time he wants to negotiate?? Like in the last book he got outsmarted by the spider queen so he upgraded her from not intelligent to semi intelligent??? Like what??? There are so many parallels between this book and the first!! In this one we learn that jack is passionate about saving lives!! We also learned this in the first book when he was introduced as an emt. In this book we learned that jack doesn’t like tyrannical empires!! We also learned this in the first book when he became leader of the rebellion JGJFKDK god it’s a mess

Honestly I really loved this book, but the one thing that really didn’t sit well with me was the treatment of Clara and her mental illness. As someone with cptsd the seeming lack of empathy with which the protagonist thought about her mental illness and her trauma always nagged at me and the ending made it a LOT worse. I really didn’t like the ending and it’s portrayal of mental illness
