Insane vampyre & hillbilly heroine find their HEA
Reviewed: 10-08-22
Lothario is the "Enemy of Old". His character has been build up during the previous books in the series, so my expectations were high. I wasn't disappointed. I loved the clashes between her forthrightness + common sense and his dramatic ways. I just wish the narrator hadn't emphasised the insane part so much in the erotic scenes. It makes the hero sound like an inmate in a Victorian asylum.

Loved it. While the book can be read as a stand alone, I'd recommend reading book 1 first, where the world and the characters are introduced.
In book 2 miss Hannah Myles continues to solve mysteries and have clashes with Lord Wycliffe. No HEA in this book, though I'm sure there will be one for miss Hannah before the series is finished.

Jane Austen with zombies
Reviewed: 08-09-22
A great story for anyone who enjoys fantasy and regency stories. An agent from France have managed to turn a number of upper-class people into zombies. Had they been poor they could have been put away, but now they mingle with everyone else in the London ballrooms. The mystery isn't hard to solve, but the comedy of manners is really fun.

Ok but...

This book would be excellent for a "Spot a Georgette Heyer reference". The author has borrowed wording and even whole scenes from a couple of books and mixed them together. Its not a direct copy of any of them but I wouldn't be surprised to see it called out for plagiarism. Apart from that the book is ok but a bit too long imho.

Story
Roundhouse Publishing editor Kate C. Leever’s first letter to her newest legacy author was intended to impress upon him the growing demand for his “vampire romances.” Though he’d expressed little to no desire for publicity, book tours or the like, it was clear that this was a writer waiting to be broken out. Correspondence with Mr. Lucern Aregeneau tended to be oddly delayed, but this time his response was quick and succinct.

Ok story, not too fond of the narrator.

It's a good story (though not one of the author's best) and the narrator has a good voice when he talks normally. Unfortunately he makes the hero sound awful. The hero is supposed to look and sound somewhere around 30, but the narrator makes him sound like a 65 year old. I don't get why he doesn't just use his normal voice? He also gets the hero's mother wrong. She's described as looking youthful - she looks the same age as her son - but he makes her sound like a Monty Python housewife.

Story
It's no ordinary morning at the Poplars – the master is found dead in his bed, and it seems his high blood pressure was not the cause. When an autopsy reveals a sinister poison, it's up to the quietly resourceful Inspector Hannasyde to catch the murderer in time to spare the next victim. But every single member of the quarrelsome Matthews family has a motive and none, of course, has an alibi.

Great detective story

A grumpy old man is murdered and everyone seem to have a motive. Inspector Hannasyde and Sergeant Hemmingway are called in to solve the case but soon find out, that its not as easy as they'd hoped. The book is arguably Heyer's best detective novel. The parsimonious Miss Harriet, the manipulative Mrs. Matthews and "the amiable snake", Randall Matthews, are unforgettable characters. Ulli Birvè does a great job of recreating the way posh Londoners spoke in the 1920's-1930's.

I love the story so I thought I wanted to get the audio book as well. Unfortunately the narrator makes the hero sound like an 80 year old telling war stories to his chums, and the erotic scenes sounded as if he were reporting from a war zone.

I love the story. The only thing I disliked is that the narrator makes the heroine sound even younger than she is. It makes it a bit creepy, when the hero is supposed to be 35.
