Story
An insatiable need for sex and love. Periods of overeating or starving. A pattern of unstable and painful relationships. Does this sound painfully familiar? Trauma counselor Kelly McDaniel has seen these traits over and over in clients who feel trapped in cycles of harmful behaviors - and are unable to stop. Many of us find ourselves stuck in unhealthy habits simply because we don't see a better way. With Mother Hunger, McDaniel helps women break the cycle of destructive behavior by taking a fresh look at childhood trauma and its lasting impact.

Mother Hunger helped me understand why, although I wasn't abused as a child, I still struggle with the relationship with my parents, with low self esteem, random bouts of depression and mood swings, and why I struggle I struggle with self sabotaging behaviors.
We all have some level of mother hunger because no mother was perfect; no mother apologizes for every time or way they hurt you, and no mother was incredible at nurturing, protecting, AND guiding. Even excellent mothers struggle with at least one. And that lack leaves a hole we try to fill for the rest of out lives. We're always searching, always hungry for a little more love or comfort.
This book names this issue that is rarely spoken and starts you on the path toward healing.

Story
When the daughter of a prominent Roman general meets a disinherited Jewish immigrant, neither one can dream of God's plan to transform them into the most influential couple of the early church. Nor can they anticipate the mountains that will threaten to bury them. Their courtship unwittingly shadowed by murder and betrayal, Priscilla and Aquila slowly work to build a community of believers, while their lives grow increasingly complicated thanks to a shaggy dog, a mysterious runaway, and a ruthless foe desperate for love.

Story
The key to spiritual and emotional health is to grasp the truth of God's transforming love for us and then let that reality influence our own hearts and relationships. It seems simple, but we are experts at complicating simple things. Instead of living lives characterized by love we find ourselves trapped in cycles of shame, violence, and addiction that steal our joy and keep us from loving others - so much so that, by all indications, Christians are living no differently than anyone else when it comes to abuse rates, use of pornography, alcohol and drug addiction, and more.

Loved this book! It describes a God of love and why we've mistaken him for a God of imposed laws. Reading this book helped me better understand who God is and why some people say they are Christians but seem to have things all wrong. This changed my life and I know it can change yours too. God is love. And scripture teaches that. We've been reading it and hearing about it all wrong.

Story
Striking beauty comes at a price. Rahab paid it when at the age of 15 she was sold into prostitution by the one man she loved and trusted—her father. With her keen mind and careful planning she turned heartache into success, achieving independence while still young. And she vowed never again to trust a man. Any man. God had other plans. Into the emotional turmoil of her world walked Salmone, a prominent leader of Judah, held in high esteem by all Israel.

Loved this story so much!
It gets pretty romantic in the 2nd half, so if that's not your thing maybe this isn't for you. I loved it though.
The author seems to have a really good understanding of the Bible, theology, faith, and human physiology (both men and women's thoughts in story seemed very realistic).
Rehav will pull you in and make you fall in love with her, Salmon, and God.
Highly Reccomend!

Essentialism is about prioritizing what is most important in life and then setting up the correct boundaries, habits, mindsets, and behaviors to make those things happen. If we were all essentialists, this world would be a much better place.

Women have a important biological rhythm they experience every month that affects productivity, weight, sex drive, energy, and mood. It is essential to be aware of and take care of this rhythm, but it has been widely ignored by medical, nutrition, and fitness research. So as women, we diet, we deprive, and we cram as much as possible into our day, striving to accomplish impossible to-do lists, and scheduling our lives based on a 24-hour time cycle, ignoring the intuitive time our bodies naturally keep: a monthly cycle with four hormonal phases that offer incredible advantages.

Story
Brain research has found that our thoughts and beliefs affect our physical, mental and spiritual health. Mind and body are interrelated, and we are designed for healthy relationships of love and trust. When we understand God as good and loving, we flourish. Unfortunately, many of us have distorted images of God and mostly think of him in fearful, punitive ways. This leads us into unhealthy patterns of self-defeating behaviors and toxic relationships. But our lives can change when God renews our minds with a truer picture of him.

Reviewed: 07-16-22
I found this book super helpful in thinking about the psychological impacts of religion. It's important to not only think about what my religion tells me I should do, but also to look at if that view point helps me live a better, healthier life.
The answer: think for yourself and believe that God is love. If you accept those two things as vital. You will drastically improve... well, everything.
