Reviewed: 04-05-24
Thank you, Marianne Williamson. You have changed my life for the better. I first read this book as a print copy several years ago and didn’t finish it, but returned to it recently on audio form and I am so glad I did. Hearing her read her own words hits differently in the very best way. I wish return to this book, and to love, again and again.

But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. Was on the edge of my seat the entire book
Reviewed: 01-11-24
This book was so good! I was guessing the entire time up until the end and still did not see the twist that came when it did. The voice performance was generally fine except for the parts of Verity’s autobiography, which at times felt like a robotic voice. I also think that the character of Jeremy was so significant it would have been worth it to have a male voice actor alongside a female voice actor for the story ti really have impact it could. Overall, a great read! I will definitely try another of Hoover’s books and I am glad this was the first I read.

After a harrowingly close contact with juvenile sociopath Simon Gutmunsson, junior FBI consultants Emma Lewis and Travis Bell went their separate ways: Emma rejected her Quantico offer and Travis stayed to train within a new unit of the FBI Behavioral Science division. But the unit’s latest case is feeling eerily familiar and Kristin Gutmunsson—Simon Gutmunsson’s eccentric twin—reaches out to Travis to send a warning: Emma is in peril.

Last 1/3 good, but did not stick landing
Reviewed: 01-08-24
I loved the first book but the second one as a bit of a let down. The pacing was too slow in the first 2/3 of the book with no payoff for caring about key characters in the last 1/3 such as Kirk. I did like the romance building between Emma and Bell but it dragged on too long and would have been more effective if there was more declaration of their love before that last 1/3 for drama and higher stakes. The cliffhanger was fine but felt so low energy to head into what is presumably the end of a trilogy. I’ll be reading the next book if there is another for sure, but Book 2 just kind of wobbled to an end when it could really have stuck the landing.

Great narrator and enjoyable read though a rushed ending

Really enjoyed the voice of the narrator and her pronunciation of the various words in French, Italian and words in other languages and from other times that shaped the period of which Leamer writes. I enjoyed the book but really wanted more details on the fallout when Capote’s excerpt was published. I especially wondered about how some people remaining his friend and others not effected their own interactions or perhaps how it changed whether people in this social circle ever let anyone like Capote in again. Overall, good book.

Story
In February 2011 John Galliano, the lauded head of Christian Dior, imploded with a drunken, anti-Semitic public tirade. Exactly a year earlier, celebrated designer Alexander McQueen took his own life three weeks before his women's wear show. Both were casualties of the war between art and commerce that has raged within fashion for the last two decades.

Story
Lorraine Hansberry, who died at thirty-four, was by all accounts a force of nature. Although best-known for her work A Raisin in the Sun, her short life was full of extraordinary experiences and achievements, and she had an unflinching commitment to social justice, which brought her under FBI surveillance when she was barely in her twenties. While her close friends and contemporaries, like James Baldwin and Nina Simone, have been rightly celebrated, her story has been diminished and relegated to one work—until now.

I will never forget this book. I loved Lorraine Hansberry ever since I was a child dreaming of becoming a writer. This book gave me so much more to love. What an incredible human, artist, and activist she was. This book touched me in such a real way, I had such deep grief in the chapter about her illness and passing, becoming among the mourners of someone I have known to be deceased as long as I’ve known her name. Imani Perry renders her with such aliveness and love that I was taken fully through her life and brought to that grief and then also the inspiration to pick up my pen and write in honor of Ancestor Hansberry. This was a pleasure to read and learn from. I’ll be thinking about this book for quite some time.

Best audiobook of a graphic novel out there
Reviewed: 01-20-23
Given the visual nature of graphic novels I am rarely inclined to buy an audible version, but this one gets it right and Ana he’s to being along not only the writing and imagery but the spirit of Craft’s book. Definitely hoping to listen to other audible versions of graphic novels that are this well done. As for the book itself, “The New Kid” is a wonderful book. I admire how Craft hits on serious issues around race, class, masculinity and difference in ways that are relevant for the age of the characters and primary audience for this book, but on a way that people needing to learn about these issues of all ages can take something from. I especially think the character of Ms. Rawle and some of the other teachers in the book are an important mirror for teachers to be self-reflective in their own classrooms and interactions with young people. All the kids in this book were so lovable, even the annoying Andy was humanized in an important way. I look forward to reading more of Craft’s work and similar such books. Excellent!
