Story
Just hours after humans are born, the gods take what little power we have. In return, they protect our borders from the vicious, merciless fae. The humans who manage to keep their power are known as the corrupt. And they are burned. When my forbidden power is discovered, I’m forced to flee my tiny village and the life I adore. To survive, I make a desperate bargain with the mercenary who abandoned me at my weakest moment. Our deal is simple: I’ll help him and his mysterious friends sneak into the city, and he’ll help me learn to wield the strange, dark power I’ve always kept hidden.

narrators make and break audiobooks
Reviewed: 11-14-24
Female narrator was good with the main character voice but sometimes made her have a very childish cadence. Her male voices sound slurred, not deeper, which is not great. 3.5 ⭐
The male narrator gets a 2 ⭐. He carries a cadence that lilts up then down at the end of every sentence, it makes the male lead sound like a pompous idiot you can't get behind actually liking. It's simply poor voice acting to not be able to add proper emotion to set a scene.
Overall performance is a 3 just because most of the story is read by the female lead.

Narrator doesn't really match the tone of the story
Reviewed: 08-30-24
She's not a bad narrator but she doesn't fit this story, she's too bubbly and juvenile sounding. Narrators really can make or break a story and unfortunately that was the case here.

DNF.. it was just tedious sometimes with no where near enough dialogue. I reached Part 2 and still did not care one bit for the characters.

Story
Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it. So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.

Pronouncing words/names properly is such an easy move, why narrators get this so wrong and it is not corrected in editing is beyond me. This error was just too distracting.

We owe it to our vets to understand their experiences
Reviewed: 02-08-24
I am having a hard time even putting into words the depth of emotion this book invokes. Hindsight gives us a broader understanding of the past, we move forward with the knowledge we possess today and presume it was understood then. This is a mistake. There is so much I did not know about Vietnam and the people who endured it... Our society witnessed the conveyance of these men and women from presumed patriots to social pariahs. But the story is not all heartache; there is joy, love, undying friendship, and most of all there is healing. Kristin Hannah knocked it out of the park again.

narrator wasn't bad enough to make me stop listening but was not good either. the constant mispronounciation of "hearth" was ridiculous, and the almost robotic cadence was tiresome. I do wonder if this is a post production editing problem but I don't think I will be able to listen to another book by this narrator. the story was good, if not a big slow until about chapter 20. I still am unsure if the "nightmare" is something to ultimately be feared... I'm guessing the reader will get more clarity in the next book but tbh, I am not going to bother reading it to find out.

Can't wait to dive into the next in the series! I see Julia Whelan narrated another series about Kat and that will be going on my list too. Each narrator did a fantastic job but the pace needed adjusted when they changed; Tarset's needed 1.20 pace, Kat's needed 1.05.
