About this listen

For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom. But the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking.

Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.

Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom of Blunder—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.

But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the most dangerous men in Blunder…and guilty of high treason.

He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

i was pleasantly surprised by this book and enjoyed it very much. I have not read this author work before but I will definitely read more
This a lush, dark eerily atmospheric story. The characters are well fleshed out and likable. And thank goodness the MC isn’t a whiny, dimwit that stumbles uselessly into one problem to the next. I’m tired of that trope in books so this was refreshing

Great New Dark Fantasy

I started and finished the entire audio in a day. Great narration and interesting plot. This was a breath of fresh air fantasy read for me that got me out of a months long slump. Cool magic system that isn’t the typical copy and paste of most fantasy books. The storytelling felt lyrical and the romance was *chef’s kiss*. Ending wasn’t abrupt with a horrible cliffhanger but I definitely wish I didn’t have to wait months for book 2.

LOVED

When one loses the knowledge that only one person is reading because their talent and skill are so well honed, that is a wonderful thing. Performing a story so original that it wets one’s appetite for the next installment. It’s like a modern, fantastically great Grimes Fairy tale .

Eager for book two, great new fantasy

I thought that the narrator did a great job. The story was definitely a little slow to start, but it picked up. I’m excited to read the next installments of this series.

I really love this book, I was transported into this fantasy world full of magic and mystery. I would highly recommend this book if you like Hans Christian Andersen fairytales.

Great for a magical book fix

I definitely take YA books with a generous pinch of salt, but this was a fun one! The limericks and writing style were really enjoyable and despite some YA cringe moments, I thought it was pretty good. The narrator was pretty talented, a moderate amount of sound effects without feeling like you’re listening to a soap opera. I did. think it was strange the narrator was American as some of the dialog and verbiage sounded British English, but not a big deal. Definitely would recommend.

A pleasant surprise!

Absolutely captivating. I loved every single millisecond of this story. It was so good. The characters are amazing and the plot is top tier. Gothic fantasy with a magical twist. It’s everything I could have hoped for and more. And that narrator… she needs a raise. Her story telling just brought it to a whole other level. FYI major cliffhanger alert. Simply amazing. Cannot wait for the second book.
