Publisher's summary

For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom. But the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking.

Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.

Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom of Blunder—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.

But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the most dangerous men in Blunder…and guilty of high treason.

He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

Great Story

What’s to Love: I love the magic system in this series! It’s so creative and different, and the story itself seems very well thought out and executed. The actress did a great job with all of the female characters.

What’s Not to Love: There wasn’t a lot of character development. Somehow I still feel pretty indifferent about almost all of her relationships really (with the exception of her cousin). The romance was extremely forced (“Hmmm, where can we add some spice?? It doesn’t really work here, but let’s do it anyway!”). The acting…well, every villain or questionable character speaks sloooowly and super deeply, like a forced evil villain voice (think Dr. Claw—ok maybe not quite like that). Come to think of it, almost every guy character gets this voice at some point.

Listener Challenge: The word SNARTED is clearly pronounced in place of snorted. I need to see the printed version of this book, because I really hope it says snarted too. I feel like that would make this book 5 stars.

5 stars

took me a little bit to get into this book. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel. I think if I read this book, I wouldn't have put it down, but because I listened to it on audible, I flew through this. The magic system is so good, and it's not overly complicated to follow along. the female character kind of bothered me a little. shes has lived with this creature, she calls the nightmare and hasn't evolved. That was kind of disappointing. she was a little too soft. but im hoping for the 2nd book. She will come back a true BA.

Decent first book from a new author.

Overall this book has an interesting magic system and story line. The book could use better interaction/dialogue between characters and better world building. There are several glaring issues with how things work even considering the magic system, but the book is still working reading/listening.

Easily became one of my favorites.

I finished this book in 3 days. I couldn't stop. I felt lost in the world, enthralled with the poetic riddles. Beautifully written. If you like fantasy you should absolutely give this book your time.

Thoroughly enjoyed this listen

The narrator was okay, but I'm picky. Story overall was a great change of pace from the overabundance of fairies/mates/ romance over storyline I've run into lately. A great balance was struck here, with a lot of imperfectly human characters and relationships, a new magical world, and a chaotic last chapter that had me pre-order the next book immediately! Can't wait to see what's next.

Intriguing Story w/ Welcomed Originality

The story was decent with a plot that involves a unique magical system that reminds me of Yu-Gi -Oh! Thre is also some resemblance to Daughter of No Worlds. Some of the more main characters felt flat to me but I was invested enough to care what was happening to them. There’s way more plot than romance, so don’t read looking for too much of it, but when it happens it’s 🌶️🌶️. The narrator was okay for me.
