Story
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

Excellent story, excellent performance, and very enjoyable. Mr. Koontz is indeed a master storyteller! I would say he's much, much better than Mr. King and, thankfully, less opinionated. The love and kindness towards animals shines through in many of Dean's works, which includes this one ... leaves me wishing I could find a Michael J of my own!

I normally like audio books that are read by the author, but, this one is lacking. It sounds like Gary Regard is eating a hard candy during much of the time and his breathing is very distracting. The story was great, however, and worth the listen.

This is my absolute favorite Dean Koontz book and has been for a very long time. I have loved this story so much that I have read it at least a dozen times, own several printed copies, and have just finished listening to this Audible version. I adored the afterword by the master, Dean Koontz, himself. The narration was exceptional and Eduardo Ballerini's voice was so easy to listen to. I am sure that I will be registering!
