Story
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

BK’s character development is superlative.

I always think twice about starting a book that takes over 16 hours of listening, but once I get in to one of Barbara Kingsolver’s novels, I’m hooked on learning about the characters.
Another thing I love about this story is the use of metaphors to describe feelings. The lead character in this book uses so many clever ones that are appropriate to his culture and that further define who he is and how he thinks.

Story
Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at 17. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media.

I loved the characters in this story and how the author developed their complex personalities, wants and needs. Barbara Kingsolver has a magical way to form pictures in the mind about everything that the characters feel and see. A great story of faith, science and the challenges of being human.

Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Mean Chey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. This book should have been half the length that it is. I didn’t find enough meat to the characters or the storyline to keep me engaged. It felt like an episode of keystone cops with characters going here and there, not resolving anything. I wish I’d liked it more.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Wonderful book, well written, interesting, thought provoking and even humorous at times. As a woman of 70+ years, I recall the sexism that surrounded everything women did, how it was indeed a ‘man’s world’ and women were there to serve. Times have gotten better.. not perfect, but better.. and many men now realize how important a role women play in making things happen and making things better.

Surprised by how much I liked this
Reviewed: 01-08-23
The book takes place from the viewpoint of a boy with autistisim and I was amazed at how strange, but interesting it was to see things through his lens. The author obviously did a lot of research and the story comes together in a structured, simple way… much like the way the boy thinks.

Enjoyable story
Reviewed: 02-15-21
I enjoyed this book but had a difficult time through the first half because the narration didn’t sound at all like it was coming from a 13 year old and because the main character’s actions and thinking swing between being that of a 40 year old (uncharacteristically mature) and then back to that of a youngster. Once I got to the middle I began to enjoy the characters more and found myself wanting to finish. I liked the way the author drew parallels between this story and other tales and life-lessons at the end.

I found this book to be both entertaining and informative about the Department of commerce and the role it plays in our government. Perhaps because I stopped and started this while I was doing other activities, I found it to be a little disconnected as far as what the main takeaway of the book was supposed to be. But I enjoyed it nonetheless and feel better educated about our weather service and the dedication of most of our government workers.
