About this listen

Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Mean Chey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. Life would be hard enough without the worry for their chronically ill child, Nisay, and the added expense of medicines that are not working. Just when things seem worst, Sang Ly learns a secret about the ill-tempered rent collector who comes demanding money - a secret that sets in motion a tide that will change the life of everyone it sweeps past. The Rent Collector is a story of hope, of one woman's journey to save her son and another woman's chance at redemption. It demonstrates that even in a dump in Cambodia - perhaps especially in a dump in Cambodia - everyone deserves a second chance.

Diane does such a beautiful job reading that she transports you to Cambodia itself! Cameron does what people of faith fail to do and that is to find beautiful and creative ways to express the best story of all - the hope of a savior come down!

A gripping and moving story of redemption and forgiveness

I hadn’t read a book in so many years. But reading/listening to this story has made me want to read more. It’s truly touching. I cried after reading some parts. I’m glad my professor had us read this.

Beautiful Story

I loved this book. It humanizes people living in the terrible conditions.... the largest dump in Cambodia, and shares their story in an uplifting way.

Just play with words! This is a wonderful story with many messages. Extremely intelligent writing! It is excellent material for a Bookclub. Can’t wait to discuss with my friends. Imagine finding happiness in a dump?!

Not too trashy

A great lesson to look deeper into your daily for meaning. There is always more to the story of anything than on the surface. Narrator did an excellent job.

Life Lesson

I have a feeling that this book is better listened to than read. It meandered at times to rather lengthy stories within the story. Some were meaningful to the overall story but others were superfluous. But the main tale of a Cambodian family living and making their living in a dump and the heroine’s journey out of illiteracy while she came to understand her teacher was both unusual and informative.

Interesting story raised up by gorgeous narration
