Gritty, post apocalyptic, funny romance

First in series, good post apocalyptic world building. Gritty. Aliens on Earth to save the last of humanity. Content Warning: Some graphic death scenes I’d the bugs killing a child. The actual death isn’t quite described, but the body’s state after is described. Also, if you are arachnophobic, or have a serious dislike of bugs, skip past the description of the bugs (especially right before bedtime). She describes it well, and hearing it versus reading it gave me chills. Blech. I had to pause listening until the next morning because it was too close to bedtime. I didn’t want to dream about these things. No thank you.

The romance brought a lightness to this very dark world Lynnea built. The romance was everything I’ve come to expect from Lynnea’s books. The characters are good starter characters for the series. She’s tough, and doing everything she can to survive in this new version of her world. He’s an alien hunter desperate to protect his fated mate, and save what’s left of Earth. Both from a species on the brink of extinction. Pulls you in and gets you set up to read the rest of the series.

Conflict - some humans believe the Xarc’N brought the bugs to take over. Or there is a lot of misunderstanding that leads to fear. Breaking barriers.

Spice - one full scene, but mostly teases otherwise. It’s a slow burn, but definitely a good burn. Readers who like her Tallean series will most likely enjoy this.

The narrators are good. Troy Duran narrated the Tallean series and is does the growls voices so well. Kiera Stevens is new to me, but I think her voice was perfect for Alice. Good pace from both, and good expression.

🥰 i enjoyed listening to this story. I’d already read it, and loved it. It’s so good and listening to it just adds that extra bit to make it 👩‍🍳💋 The narrator’s voice really puts the zing in all the right places. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Probably my favorite series of Linnea’s. Readers who enjoy sassy human ladies and growly alien fated mates will enjoy this series. CW with this one - discussions of failed pregnancy (but no miscarriages directly on page)

The story - cozy monster romcom. Very cute. Would have loved more interaction with the items in the shop. Reminds me of a cozy mystery series that has a pawn shop with magical items. Always love the takes on this type of trope. "Shop with magical items". The characters are a good fit for each other, and there's a good development of the two MCs, so you get a sense of who they are. Very little interaction with others, but I liked that for this length of story. Kept the character stories more compact.

The narration was a little slow for me, but that's intentional with the accents involved. It made it drag for me though, so I sped it up to 1.2x speed. Azalea does an amazing job with the accents. The MC sounded a lot like my aunt which weirded me out. I almost texted her to ask when she'd started narrating books. lol.

I've read at least one other book in this series and I look forward to reading others.

This is the first in the series, so there’s a lot of world building, including a lot of conversations and inner monologue/descriptions especially in the first half of the book. It’s a slow build and a steamy slow burn. And the action is pretty good. The steamy scenes are yummy as always. A mystery about what’s going on with the humans who go to Utopia sets up to be the overarching theme for the series. It’s weirdly reminiscent of 1984/Orwellian dystopia but with Aliens.

Wen’s voice/narration style reminds me a lot of the “How It’s Made” narrator. No clue why, that’s just what I hear.i even made my husband listen to a little bit to confirm it. I had to speed the narration to 1.2x to get good pace on which to focus. Kai’s narration was a little fast at this speed, but I didn’t mind that so much.

It’s an intriguing mix of dystopian society and romance.

Lots of action and intrigue. Some spice, but not as much as others in this series. There’s so much going on that I think the characters just have a hard time finding moments to have the spice. Loved the main characters for each other, and love the nicknames the MCs use for each other. Just adorable and different. The FMC’s mom..just hmm… to the average person she may be just a clueless, hapless mom trying to guilt trip her kid into the HEA SHE thinks is right for the daughter. For me she was manipulative to the point of being abusive. I can’t go into much about her without spoiling the story, but I had a hard time liking this character. She doesn’t detract from the story so much, but she is a fly buzzing in the background. Argus and Mia really have a hard time just trying to get time together with everything going on, but it makes the moments they DO get together that much more meaningful. It’s a good continuation in the story. The description says it can be read as a stand alone or as part of the series, but I highly recommend going in order. I’ve read or listened to several of these out of order, and I’m going to re-read in order. It feels more sensical that way. Troy Duran is amazing narrator as always. He’s a perfect choice for bringing the characters to life.

Good start to series - action, heat, romance

This is a good first book in the series. Good pace that keeps the tension until the very end. The two MCs have sparks from the beginning. The male MC is dominant without being controlling. The FMC is strong, confident, and independent. Lots of delicious steam, action and bit of angst. There are two "almost" SA scenes w/the FMC + other characters. One is a bit intense so be aware. Her recovery + emotions afterward are so spot on. The MCs have to get past insecurities that develop from this scene. As expected, they have work through cultural differences before finding their HEA. Also includes the redemption arc for another character. He has a long way to go before he is redeemable for me though. We are introduced to several characters who get their own stories later.

Troy Duran is the perfect narrator for this book. He has a beautiful, smooth deep, growly voice that suits this character and story so well. I imagine that if a bear could talk, it would have this narrator’s voice.

Looking forward to the rest of the series!

This couple is fire, if only they’d get out of their own way. The FMC was scared of being hurt again, and by all accounts, the MMC is exactly the same as the guy who broke her heart…except that he isn’t. At times it felt like Lettie was punishing Vore for what her ex did, and she had a hard time moving past that. But once they both got past this, oh they are absolutely beautiful together. So much passion between these two.

Troy Duran has the perfect growl voice for Vore, and he does so well with the other voices. Really enjoyed listening to him narrate this.
