Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A beautiful tapestry.
Reviewed: 06-01-23
This book is written like a tapestry that is woven as the story progresses. I did not realize that at first and felt disappointment that it was as much, if not a bit more, about human characters than about a most charming octopus. As the story comes together I began to love it more and more. At the end I stopped multitasking and just listened through tears to the conclusion of one of the most satisfying books I have read/listened to in a long time. Five stars are not enough.

Story
The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as number one internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcripts - and a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink.

Book is of course well written and researched. It was uncomfortable to listen to though. I have stepped back from 24 7 news because before January 20 I was exhausted and stressed by the horrific confusion of the T administration. I almost could not abide hearing T quoted. But I learned so much about those who were brave and honorable even serving under our former President psychopath. The end of the book frankly scared me. We remain in peril.

I have long admired and enjoyed John Grisham’s work. One never knows what part of the author is reflected in his protagonists , but I like to think that the humanity that shines through Mr Grisham’s work is all his. This warm, engaging story went by too fast. I loved the basketball sections and imagined Sooley soaring over the heads of the crowd (amazing writing). I did not expect the story to twist as it did and became very emotional toward the end. Not the first time with this author. Great read. Great reader.

Terrific experience — both travel details and survival experience. Perfectly read by the author. I’m too old to take a trip like this but am fascinated by this part of the world and felt I was there — even during the bear attack. I loved the description which made it seem as though both were frightened as well as angry. I cannot forget the description of the bear leaving and continually over his shoulder. Great job.

I am not a fan of much of the bloody contemporary vampire fiction. While I know The Historian is also a work of fiction, it is so very different. It is so full of beautiful descriptive prose, historical background and vampire lore that the excellent story is only part of my enjoyment. I greatly admire Ms Kostova’s work and always eagerly seek more.

A well written and clear eyed view of disastrous family dynamics.
Reviewed: 07-19-20
I don’t know what I expected — but Mary Trump has produced a thoughtful, well written and clear window into her life as a part of the Trump family. This is no rant or “pity party” as some have written. Rather it offers an insightful view of the dynamics that produced the current occupant of the Oval Office. Although Donald was twisted, supported and promoted by his father Fred — a particularly scary individual—- he comes off as a mediocre film flam man who worships stern father figures, cannot bear to be criticized and who will abuse the power of his office to support the broken boy created by his tyrant of a father. I do not feel sorry for Donald. I do feel so sad about what this twisted individual has done and may still do to our country. Great job Mary Trump. You have made a difference.

Inspired by the Cervantes classic, Sam DuChamp, mediocre writer of spy thrillers, creates Quichotte, a courtly, addled salesman obsessed with television who falls in impossible love with a TV star. Together with his (imaginary) son Sancho, Quichotte sets off on a picaresque quest across America to prove worthy of her hand, gallantly braving the tragicomic perils of an age where “Anything-Can-Happen.” Meanwhile his creator, in a midlife crisis, has equally urgent challenges of his own.

Story
Detective Dave Robicheaux’s world isn’t filled with too many happy stories, but Desmond Cormier’s rags-to-riches tale is certainly one of them. Robicheaux first met Cormier on the streets of New Orleans, when the young, undersized boy had foolish dreams of becoming a Hollywood director. Twenty-five years later, when Robicheaux knocks on Cormier’s door, it's to ask about a young woman he found who’s been crucified. She disappeared near Cormier’s Cyrpemort Point estate, and Robicheaux, along with young Deputy Sean McClain, are looking for answers.

When I start to listen to one of Mr Burke’s books, particularly one in the Dave Robicheaux series set in New Iberia Parish, it takes only a minute before I feel as though I am back home with friends I care about and have missed. I have never visited Southern Louisiana. But Mr Burke has made it and all of the other settings for his novels very familiar territory. Once again it’s good to reacquaint with Dave, Clete, Alafair, Sherriff Helen and for the second time with Smiley, the assassin with the good heart. The story is fast paced and entertaining with a surprise ending. But for me it’s just good to be home with friends. Mr Burke captures scenery and emotions so perfectly that at times I identify completely. So sorry it had to end!!

And he is ready to detail the cases that are too gruesome to air on television, cases that still haunt him, and the few cases where the killer got away. These cases are horrifyingly real, and the detail is so mesmerizing you won't be able to turn it off.

I love the show, which I first happened on by accident but the book was better. Lt Det Kenda gave a casual but very deep look at a career as a homicide detective. He is forthright about his principles and beliefs. He also showed the very human side of someone who deals with horror on a daily basis. As a civilian I had no idea. Also his explanation of whether to buy a gun for self protection is the best I’ve heard. I’m not getting one! Thanks Kenda. I’d like to shake your hand.
