meh - REALLY slow start
Reviewed: 12-02-20
It got better after chapter 6 (or was it 7?) - more like the first book once there was a quest to accomplish. But it was never as good as the first one. Overall I think the first book was complete in and of itself but the second book does continue the story and answers the question of who the avatar of JH was at the end of the first book.
I also found it interesting that some of the criticisms of the first book (regarding attitudes towards women especially ) were clearly heard by the author and he specifically made efforts to address them or at least modify his writing to take them into account. Because they were so clearly put into the book I’m not sure if it was a just “pandering to the pc crowd” or “I want to correct the impression that I feel that way”, my brain pretty much read it as the former.
I’m sure I will listen to it again in the future but I don’t think I’d be rushing to watch a movie version on opening weekend, and I’m not sure I would listen to it as often as the first book. I think I’d give it a C (maybe a B minus).

Wow this book is longer than it needs to be
Reviewed: 08-29-17
I'm in "chapter 2" of the THIRD segment of this book (only 6 hr and 7 min to go) and all I can say so far is it is way longer than it needs to be. I feel like there has been almost no action for being 2/3 through the book and I'm having a hard time NOT putting it on the "did not finish" pile. I wanted to like this series, and the first book was really good. But this one is bordering on tedious.
The narrator is okay, although I really dislike the sing song voice tone she uses whenever the Eletions are speaking. But that's a personal taste thing.

All three Harper Hall books need to be remastered
Reviewed: 09-20-16
Still love the story after all these years. And the narrator, while not to my taste, does a good job. But these recordings are VERY old and it shows. At the very least they need to be remastered, if not re-recorded. There are awkward cuts and frequent dropped words - as if the recordings were made from cassette tapes that had been warped. It makes me hesitate to buy any more of the Dragonrider books because I'm concerned that there will be similar problems if the recordings are of a similar age.

Story
Children have always disappeared under the right conditions - slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

I loved the book but...

I loved this book to the point that I'm planning on giving the ebook as a gift to a friend. However I wasn't thrilled with the audiobook because the reading seemed flat. I kept reminding myself that it was probably a choice made, trying to convey the personality of the main character in the book, but it was enough that I will be careful to check the previews of other books read by the same narrator.

Story
Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever, and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.

overall it liked it BUT

The story was good and as usual the narration was wonderful. There was just ONE thing that bugged me and will probably prevent me from listening to this book again.
Anytime there was a conversation in the book it was basically:
Blah blah, x said
blah blah, y said
blah blah, x said
blah blah, y said.
the sentence structure on conversations was so repetitive throughout the book that it got irritating. I don't know, maybe reading it would have made the problem less noticeable? I'm not sure but it kinda makes me question buying another audiobook by this author - will have to check one out from the library first to see if the flaw continues in his other books.

Welcome to Glacier Country! Luthor Devlin and his ranch hands were out tracking 20th-century rustlers when they stepped into a time warp! There on the jagged cliffs was a woolly mammoth, a sabre-toothed tiger, and a tawny, near-naked savage. She was a primal fantasy come true - that left him stunned!

A nice romance
Reviewed: 05-21-13
I should start off by saying that I was gifted this book by the author. That said all it meant was when I ended up not finishing the audiobook I went ahead and bought a copy of the ebook so I could finish the book. I'm believe that everyone's taste in narrators is different, as is everyone's taste in books. I tend to be fairly picky in my tastes of narrators and I tend to prefer one narrator to read the entire book. So this book started with a disadvantage in my eyes (male & female voices). But what caused me to finally stop listening in frustration was I felt like the two readers were competing to see how fast they could read - almost to the point of stepping on each other's lines.
So as I say I finished the book by reading it. It's a nice little romance that reminds me of the days when I read serial romances. The sex was fairly tame and there is a Happy Ever After feeling. All in all I would recommend it for someone who likes light contemporary romance.
