I thoroughly enjoyed learning aspects of this particular chapter of the Pacific War that I hadn’t known before. Also, the narrator did a wonderful job!

It amazes me how people in command can so easily sacrifice the lives of their soldiers to their own self aggrandizement. As I say this, I’m also keenly aware that this type of behavior has been the bane of the common soldier for several thousand years. Enough cannot be said of the people that have taken up arms against oppression.

While listening to this wearing headphones, I literally kept correcting the narrator out loud to the annoyance of my wife. The story was great, but get a narrator that does his homework.

Good for a child’s point of view, but I found it a tedious listen. Also, the story became tedious, for me, as well.

I enjoyed the depth in which the author fleshed out the details of the people involved in that hellish ordeal.

My grandfather was an American infantry private, in an automatic rifle squad, with the Rainbow Division. This account, more than any other, allowed me to get a minuscule glimpse of what he endured.

It was a perfect requiem to the people involved in that struggle. They, willingly and sometimes unwillingly, paid a very heavy price in countering the fanatical Japanese regime of the time. My heart goes out to those extraordinary American sailors.

My uncle was a waist gunner in a B-17G named Beelzebub. He was inducted into the “Lucky Bastards Club” because he survived his tour. I had absolutely no idea what he, and his comrades, went through until listening to this amazing book.
