About this listen

“Simply put—and I do not say this lightly—Incidents Around the House is the most purely effective horror novel I have ever read.”Neil McRobert, Esquire (Best Horror Books of 2024, So Far)

A chilling horror novel about a haunting, told from the perspective of a young girl whose troubled family is targeted by an entity she calls “Other Mommy,” from the New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box

“This book is the monster that lives inside your closet.”—Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of How to Sell a Haunted House

To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?”

When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay.

Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

But Other Mommy needs an answer.

Incidents Around the House is a chilling, wholly unique tale of true horror about a family as haunted as their home.

“A masterwork of unadorned existential terror.”—Zoje Stage, USA Today bestselling author of Baby Teeth

“Josh Malerman is such an insidious architect. I call all of his haunted houses home, and this just might be his most devilish design yet.”—Clay McLeod Chapman, author of What Kind of Mother and Ghost Eaters

Child’s voice narrates the ENTIRE novel.

Bella’s voice is grating and her narration becomes really tedious in short order. Slowing the speed down to 85 makes it somewhat more tolerable.
I did manage to finish the entire novel because of all the reviews stating how scary it was and I loved Bird Box so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, this is more a novel of family drama and a deeply flawed, narcissistic mother than anything else. The “thing” in the closet is only marginally scary and doesn’t really do that much until the last chapter where its actions are totally predictable.
An ok listen if you can tolerate the kid voice and manner of speech for 8 hours and are easy to unnerve. Reading the novel might be a way better option.

Super creepy

I loved the story. The narrator did a fantastic job. I’m a horror book nerd, the scarier, gorier, and horrifying the better. While this had no gore it was intensely creepy. The ending fell short though, like it was rushed just to finish. But I still recommend listening to this book!!!

I’ve never gotten so creeped out from an audiobook before. I was not only, given goosebumps but also moved to tears. Wild ride 10/10

Best narration I've EVER heard.

And as the description promised, a very horrifying story. I'm a horror addict, and this book rang all the bells! But there's just one thing: you can't offer me characters to cherish (ok, Real Mommy was a bit much) and then end them in a way none of them deserves. An excremental ending, if ever there was one. Feh.

It’s in my heart

That was eerie, and the little girl voice was perfect. The mommy voice was also great, but daddo had room for improvement. Either way, i was creeped out from the minute i turned on the book, and ynormally I’m no fan of sci fi horror but man was this good and great renching.

Fabulous narrator

Audio is the way to go for this one. What an amazing narrator. I thought I’d be annoyed by the kid voice but it was so well done. The plot was unnerving and paced well. Excellent!

Spooked to the Core

I jumped into this book with almost no prior knowledge of the plot. Malerman does such a great job painted a horrifying mental picture. There are some scenes I’ll never get out of my head. Narrator, Gill, does a phenomenal job as well!!

Meh, gave it a chance but....

The story wasn't bad however, to go through all that and have it end the way it did was disappointing. Certain sections could have been eliminated, it went on too long in places. Initially the child's voice was hard to listen to. The mother character was very hard to like, she was a shrew. The story is being told by the child and her perspective. The narration would have been better had adults voiced them. "mommy said, Daddy said got annoying.
