Story
In death, they are purified. Holding his victims under water, he washes away their sins as they struggle for their last breath. Then he stakes their bodies to the ground, exposing them for what they really are: witches. No one knows about defence attorney Charlotte Wellington's murdered sister, or about her childhood spent with the carnival that's just arrived in town. For Charlotte, what's past is past. But others don't agree. And as a madman's body count rises, she and Detective Daniel Rokov are drawn into a mission that's become terrifyingly personal.

I love Mary Burton books, but i have to confess, I only got through an hour of this one. The narrator was so monotone, without a lot of inflection or animation for the different characters. I kept nodding off while listening.
I still gave the book four stars overall, because I love Mary Burton. Recommend you read the book instead of listening though.

Another great book! Since reading to the original rangers apprentice books as a kid, I haven’t been able to keep up with the series. This new series has been great for me to get back into it.

Nils Shapiro accepts what appears to be an easy, lucrative job: find out if Beverly Mayer’s grandson is foolishly throwing away his trust fund in Hollywood, especially now, in the wake of his fiancée’s tragic death. However, that easy job becomes much more complicated once Nils arrives in Los Angeles, a disorienting place where the sunshine hides dark secrets. Terrible Narration!
Reviewed: 03-04-23
I tried. I really tried to get through this. I made it about 80% through and I just couldn't stand the narration anymore. Nils sounds like an 80-year-old Mr. Rogers, all the other characters just sound wrong. Not just wrong....cringy, eye-twitch-inducing wrong. Even the narrative parts have weird inflection, with every sentence going up at the end like a question or a complaint. The story line was probably okay, but it was hard to tell. Sorry, Bronson Pinchot, You should not be narrating books. And shame on the producer who allowed it to be put out this way.

I got bored
Reviewed: 08-10-22
I admit, I may not be giving this book enough of a chance. I'm only ninety minutes in, but I'm so dreadfully bored, I turned it off. I've read a few other books by this author and I really like her, so I was excited to try another and thought the premise very intriguing. Ninety minutes in though, the only thing that's actually happened in real time (the book's real time) is that the killer bought the book written by the survivor. That's it. Everything else has been a backstory info dump. Backstory is always critical to the tale, but I much prefer backstory to be fed to me in smaller slices, like rich cake, to flesh out the actual story. Currently, it feels like a pedantic recitation of details that may or may not be relevant. From all the good reviews, I feel like I should continue a little further. I probably won't though, because after the first ninety minutes I really don't care what happens to either of the characters.
