In the scuffle, Gus accidentally shoots and injures the ruffian, only to discover he is Lord Evan Belford, an acquaintance from their past.

Such a beautiful book. I am so excited for her next book. Alison Goodman, will now will be an auto buy for me.
Oh dear I am a terrible reviewer - everything I want to write would surely be a spoiler. I love that in portraying the clever women she sticks very carefully to historical accuracy of consequences women would face .
I rank Ms Goodman right up there with the Sherry Thomas Lady Sherlock series. How lucky I am to have found another wonderful writer.

Good Book

I wished I had read this book instead. It was a decent book but the narrator was VERY difficult to listen to. His attempt at women's voices was so bad, I cannot believe an editor listened to that and let it stand.
I'm happy to see her next book in the series has a new narrator.

Eleven-year-old Amrie St. Pierre is catching tadpoles with her friend Finn O'Reilly when the Federal fleet first steams up the Mississippi River in the spring of 1862. With the surrender of New Orleans, Amrie's sleepy little village of St. Francisville - strategically located between the last river outposts of Vicksburg and Port Hudson - is now frighteningly vulnerable. As the roar of canons inches ever closer and food, shoes, and life-giving medicines become increasingly scarce, Amrie is forced to grow up fast.

I’m glad I finished it, she is one of my favorite authors. I’ve read every book in her St Cyr series.
I found this book very slow to grab my interest, but persevered.
So many interesting facets to the people in the book . I would not get the next one if the narrator is the same though.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

The octopus took up so little of the story while the whiner 30 year old adolescent had the most attention.
