Story
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

Excellent oral history
Reviewed: 09-21-17
This was fascinating at every level. I loved hearing the recordings of actual people talking about what was going on in the moment as well as the oral histories of people reflecting on their experiences.
For those reviewers who are criticising this as anti-American I ask you to take a look at why you feel so threatened. Our nation has done some very shameful and horrible things in the past. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. If you see parallels in the present day world, that's because we have not learned yet.

Story
New York Times best-selling author Kim Stanley Robinson returns with a bold and brilliant vision of New York City in the next century. As the sea levels rose, every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. For the residents of one apartment building in Madison Square, however, New York in the year 2140 is far from a drowned city. There is the market trader, who finds opportunities where others find trouble. There is the detective, whose work will never disappear—along with the lawyers, of course.

Story
Imagine negotiating for a replacement carburetor in rural Mexico with words you're secretly pulling from a pocket dictionary. Imagine your two-year-old asking for more niunai at dinner - a Mandarin word for milk that even you don't know yet. Imagine finding out that you're unexpectedly pregnant while living in war-torn Beirut. With vivid and evocative language, Christine Gilbert takes us along with her into foreign lands, showing us what it's like to make a life in an unfamiliar world - and in an unfamiliar tongue.

Fun journey through several cultures

I very much enjoyed this book. Christine Gilbert isn't afraid to share her dreams for herself and her family, along with the successes and failures in the process. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's honest and raw.
I especially appreciate that she did her homework regarding the linguistic theory behind her project and and kept it from being dry and boring while teaching us what she learned at the same time.
I listened to the audio version and Angela Dawe did an excellent job capturing all the accents and pronunciation of the various languages and characters.

Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book. I listened to Follet's other books narrated by John Lee and as always, he's excellent.
The parallels between the history and politics of World War II and today show that we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes if we don't pay close attention to what's going on in the world. The craziness spouted by the Nazi party leading up to the war is the same craziness we hear now, just wearing a different shirt.
