About this listen

Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home. Thanks to Martin Sheen’s performance and the voices of ordinary Americans throughout this Audible Original, listeners can feel what life was like during a disruptive and uncertain period of American history. Martha Little is the Executive Producer, and Dan Gediman is the series producer of The Home Front.

Note: The Home Front contains mature and sensitive themes.

The Home Front

Any additional comments?

An early foray into developing original content for Audible lands solidly in this radio style documentary of life in America during WWII. Martin Sheen's narration anchors this series of 8 episodes that takes us from the beginnings of WWII when America was not a participant in combat through to the early post war years. Compelling and original the documentary draws heavily on real life stories gathered by the Rosie the Riveter project that lends a Ken Burns feel to the drama. Recommended.

The WWII we don't hear about...

This is very educational and informs the listener of a side to the historical drama known as WORLD WAR II that we don't often think about.

From radio broadcasts during that period to eyewitness accounts, we can see what the intensity and immensity that people experienced with regards to a new World War.

It hits hard, sometimes overly so, on the society that lived through this great conflict, but it gives you perspectives that need to be heard and felt. Mr. Sheen does a great job narrating.

A Fine Lookback At The WW2 Homefront

Great listening! This ls a series of 30 minute radio type programs that take you from Pearl Harbor to VJ day, zeroing in on the "Homefront". Great snippets of actual recordings abound, making this an easy way to learn the history of those watershed years. I could hardly stop listening until it ended. I heartily recommend it!

Audible does it again! What a great production!

I was thoroughly engrossed while listening to this. I learned some things I didn't know and some I already did. I read/listen to alot of historical fiction from the ww2 era and a lot of what happened on the Home Front I was oblivious to. I highly recommend this listen to all Americans. I have always had the utmost respect for The Greatest Generation. If you know or meet a vet or woman who stood home and worked in the war factories thank them for their service to this country. YOU truly were THE Greatest Generation!

Awesome

Really enjoyed this. Most documentaries focus on the war theatre as this one focuses on what was happening stateside. Very interesting and gives you a different perspective on WW2.

Many things that I never knew about WWII

This had the good, bad and the ugly of WWII Homefront History. There were things that I didn't want to hear about, but I needed to hear about. It made me understand my Mom and Dad better, both vets of WWII. My Mom was a nurse in the Phillipines/flight nurse in the Pacific battles of WWII and my Dad was a POW for 3 and a half years/Bataan Death March survivor.

The Manhattan Project was in there. The shortages of everything from food to gasoline and rationing. One of the last chapters dealt with PTSD. Many chapters dealt on racism and sexism, which was difficult to hear but needed also. One of the craziest things that I heard was that women were asked to keep some of their bacon fat for making bombs....who knew.

In short, from A to Z, almost everything was covered on the Homefront. I'm glad I spent the time listening and learning.

Interesting overview!

Very captivating! A retelling of the War from the other side of the ocean. Very different to what I heard in my school. Cheers from Russia, and thank you to Mr. Sheen for his outstanding performance.

History repeats itself.

I found the individuals who had live through the war time very interesting even though some were sad. I see parallels with today and it makes me uncomfortable thinking we as a nation haven't come very far. That being said I'm sure I'll be listening to this book again in the future.
