Story
From Eliza Clark, the author of the brilliant novels Boy Parts and Penance and one of Granta’s Best Young British Novelists, comes a fierce, visionary and darkly comic story collection. A woman welcomes a parasite into her body. A teenager longs for perfect skin. A scientist tends to fragile alien flora. A young man takes the night into his own hands. Unsettling, revelatory, and laced with her signature dark humor, Eliza Clark’s debut short story collection plumbs the depths of that most basic human feeling: hunger.

Just really not my cuppa tea, I guess. I'd be lying if I said all the stories made sense. Most left me puzzled. Rather than overwhelmed I felt a little underwhelmed, sorry. Pretty decent narration though.

Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months. Patricia escaped, but so did her captors - and the items stolen from her family were never recovered. Until now. On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3. For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead - with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man.

I am not sure what exactly it was..... this just was not what I have come to love and expect from Harlan Coben. The main character was so over-the-top that he actually became kind of likeable. I say kind of. The book just did not hold my interest.

Story
Everyone has secrets, and Rachel Holloway is no exception. She’s worked hard to keep the past where it belongs: dead and buried. And so far, she’s been very successful. But now the small newspaper where she works wants to produce a podcast on a cold case: the disappearance 12 years ago of young Molly Forster. Some secrets should never see the light of day, and, as far as Rachel is concerned, whatever happened to little Molly is one of them.

Really different story line
Reviewed: 04-19-25
I was mesmerized by the way the author approached this story. I've never read a book where you know upfront who both the killer and the victim are. The way Molly had to navigate her way through the podcast while protecting herself was interesting. The characters were so-so..... kind of bland, overall. A quick, easy listen that I did enjoy.

In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves—murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

Fantastic in every sense!!!!
Reviewed: 11-23-24
I don't know where to begin rating a novel of this scope. All I can say is that it's a must read. Mark Sullivan captured the hopes and agonies of the Martell family to perfection. The brutalities we as humans are capable of, are staggering. But being able to dream and look beyond the bad that happens, and being able to trust in a greater power than ourselves, is the essence of this novel.

Just a delight to read. Nothing fast-paced or fancy, and maybe that was the allure to me. Just an old woman reminiscing about her love and her family, an old woman waiting for her life to end. Until Sipsworth comes into her home. If you want a feel-good book this just might be the one ❤

Story
It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

I saw all the religious comments, and I get it. Perhaps there should be something in the description, true. But you, as readers, are always free to stop reading. The book was delightful overall, very whimsical. It made the point that you can't carry the world and all your loved ones well-being on your shoulders. I liked that. Mrs S. and her menagerie were a hoot, and the whole book was just fun.

This book was every bit as good as his first novel. I wasn't sure I'd like it because it's not my normal read. But I am blown away by the circumstances both children went through. And yet, they remained "good humans". That phrase will stick with me, along with the question "What would a good human do?" for the rest of my life. Thank you for caring enough to bring this to the attention of all of us.
