About this listen

Inspired by a true story, two teens kidnapped by an African warlord find salvation through love in a powerful and healing historical novel from the #1 bestselling author of Beneath a Scarlet Sky and The Last Green Valley.

Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori are coming of age in Uganda in the 1990s. Outstanding students, they believe in being good humans before they are kidnapped and forced into the fanatical Lord’s Resistance Army.

In a legion of young recruits, no one gets closer than Anthony to powerful messianic warlord Joseph Kony and his darkest secrets. To stay sane as he spirals through chaos, Anthony clings to his childhood lessons about being a good human. Florence’s upbringing grounds her, too, helping her keep her dreams alive even as she’s pulled deeper into the insanity of Kony’s war.

At the lowest points of their lives, certain they’ll never go home, Anthony and Florence meet by chance, fall in love, and begin to dream of surviving their captivity. They devote their lives to helping their fellow child soldiers escape bondage and return to their families and redemption by following the stars.

By turns tender, shocking, moving, desperate, and ultimately triumphant, Florence and Anthony’s story is an epic drama of humanity, a life-affirming tale, and an experience readers will never forget.

Featuring an afterword by Anthony and Florence Opoka.

Editorial Review

Endurance of the human spirit
Mark Sullivan has a knack for discovering the kind of stories that need to be brought into the light. He’s inspired by real-life people who have survived and thrived after enduring the worst of humanity—people who go on to serve as examples of the best of humanity. Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori are two profoundly good people striving for light in unimaginable darkness. While just teenagers, they are abducted and forced to become child soldiers for Joseph Kony’s cult-like regime in 1990s Uganda. With vivid detail, Sullivan tells the story of their capture, life under Kony, and their miraculous escape. Junior Nyong'o, an actor, musician, and DJ from Kenya, is a “new-to-me” narrator, and is perfectly cast to give voice to Anthony and Florence. All the Glimmering Stars is a love story at its core—and a call to action for us all to demand the end of using children in armed conflict anywhere in the world. — Tricia F., Audible Editor

Brutal but necessary insight

Raw. Genuine. Moving. A must read, especially for comfortable Americans unaware of history outside their bubble

Exceptional Read

Wow, what can I say? Mark Sullivan is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. His books take humanity and show its different persona. This book showed good and evil and how one always tries to overpower the other. The book is based on a true story with the two primary characters being contributors. It was about Uganda in the 1990's when the Lord's Resistance Army was wreaking havoc throughout the country. Not wanting to give any spoilers, I can say the book will leave you thinking about it long after it's read. I'm so thankful that I have not ever had to face the circumstances these two strong, resilient people had to face and the fact that they overcame all odds against them. Such a good book!

Understanding history

Learned about African child soldiers. I did not know much so that was good. Parts of the book are gruesome. Highly recommend.

A must read

A fantastic book about kids being abducted from their homes and used as a baby military for the the radical groups that were fighting in Africa. It’s extremely sad at times watching the terrible abuse. These poor kids went through and it’s also love story of two people that that got caught up in this nightmare and met each other and fell in love so there is some happy events.
most of it is very sad and the worst part is that it’s based on a true story. I really enjoyed it, but was sad to hear about it.

Courage overcomes atrocities

I did not like hearing about the terrible things that happened to the children in Uganda. But Mark Sullivan’s Beautiful storytelling made it possible to hear the truth that must be told and to be filled with hope that Antony and Florence’s story will continue to bring healing.

Riveting!

Just as tantalizing and amazing as “The last green valley” and “beneath a scarlet sky” this book glued me to my device for days. I could not stop telling my husband about every detail as I listened. The narrator has an amazing range of accents and pronunciation, spot on! The story gets better on every page. I’m not much of a student of recent events, as I prefer more distant events for study but Sullivan’s ability to tell the story makes any story memorable. Absolutely brilliant!
