Story
In Chicago, aka "Chiraq", the first 10 days of 2016 yielded 120 people shot. Baltimore's 2015 ended as its bloodiest and deadliest year - on a per capita basis. In 2014 Detroit's police chief called upon law-abiding citizens to take arms against its burgeoning violent, criminal subculture. Unfortunately these cities aren't anomalies. Year after year a seemingly unshakable reality of violence plagues Black communities nationwide.

I loved his opinions and views but a professional narrator would have been better... not everyone is great at that. but don't let the narration keep you from this book, it's what America needs to hear!!

Story
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

That woman is incredibly racist LOL... her book is one racist assumption after another and there were many times during the narration that I LOL'd in public at the absurdity of her conclusions. Please read this book so you can see what actual racism and a total lack of self awareness looks like. #DumpsterFire

people who criticize this author for referring to his website too much probably don't want to do the work so they found something to bitch about. he does refer readers to his website a few times but it's obviously bc he is talking about a graph or something else that doesn't translate thru the spoken word. anyway this book helped me understand why I do what I do and it was worth a listen. now will I follow thru? probably not but that's not his fault... I did clean my office tho so... maybe there is hope for me after all!!

What did you like best about Presence? What did you like least?
Amy's personal story is great, I always need a story around data or else I go to sleep. There were some parts that were heavy on data that I did, indeed, sleep through but got most of the concepts. I learned that some of the studies cited in this book were later debunked but I'm not sure I care too much about that bc I tried power posing and it works for me. I could give a shit if the study on cortisol wasn't exactly right... who cares, this works - try it!

Story
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

How about an actual story around all of this boring data?
What was most disappointing about Nancy Isenberg’s story?
OMG listening to this book is like walking through molasses in snow shoes... made me wanna hang myself. It's an interesting subject but WAY too academic.
