Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

He learned to tame the unimagined powers that lay within him. And he took his place in an ancient struggle against an evil Enemy older than time itself.

Can't believd I waited so long
Reviewed: 03-17-25
I first read a story from this world in one of the Legends antholgies. I liked it, but never read any of Feist's books, until I listened to the first Riftwar book about a year ago. It was ok, but didn't fire me up to listen to another one. Then I picked this one up in a sale and it sat in my library a while. Now I have finally listened to it and it was asesome.
The epansion of the characters and the world were excelent. I especially enjoyed the history behind the rift and the many worlds. Feist jumps years and months many times to push his story along and I think this is great. It won't be as long before I listen to another.

A rare 5 star review from me. I was enjoying an original time travel story and then the Federal bureaucracy got involved. That is guaranteed to throw a monkey wrench into anything
I suppose this is a satire, if so I need to listen to more. Listen you will dig it.

Story
First published in 1958, a year after On the Road put the Beat Generation on the map, The Dharma Bums stands as one of Jack Kerouac's most powerful and influential novels. The story focuses on two ebullient young Americans - mountaineer, poet, and Zen Buddhist Japhy Ryder, and Ray Smith, a zestful, innocent writer - whose quest for Truth leads them on a heroic odyssey, from marathon parties and poetry jam sessions in San Francisco's Bohemia to solitude and mountain climbing in the High Sierras.

Outstanding reimagining

The author used old fairy tale tropes in a modern reimagining. I really enjoyed it. The only problem
was the narrator did not vary her voice between most of the characters. This made the story hard to follow at times.
