About this listen

The world died long ago.

The world died long ago, leaving only a few here and there to rebuild. Their world had once been grand and magnificent, but too much was lost in the years after the time known as the Dying. Knowledge that had been gained over centuries disappeared from the world, lost when those who carried that knowledge died with it.

The population has grown again over the last centuries, but the world has not regained its lost knowledge or former glory. A few things survive, here and there, and scholars seek to uncover more of their Ancients lost technology. But in the midst of that comes the threat of war with a rival nation. The latest in a long line of such wars for the Kingdom of Soulan.

Enter Parno McLeod, third son of King Tammon McLeod, who is unloved by his family and laughed at by the nobility. A brawling, drinking, womanizing playboy still in his teens, the common soldiers and people love Parno because he doesn't preen and pretend and Parno loves his people and his Land, even though he doesn't love his family.

When sent away by his family on an impossible mission, can young Parno overcome the odds and become the prince that destiny intends him to be?

I had been sulking ever since having finished "Odd Billly Todd" and although I had bought this series simply because of the author, I sulked for months hoping there would be an "Odd Billy Todd" book 2. Well, I have to say that this series is SO GOOD and I will never sulk again as long as N C Reed keeps writing. And now... on to Book 2 (Parno's Destiny). Get this series! You won't regret it.

WOW. N. C. Reed's amazing talent!

Great Read

I loved everything about this book and all of its characters. I love this author, but there was a good hour or two of long battles and talks from multiple characters that you knew and didn't know that I didn't quite like. Other than that I will continue to keep on going through the series and to support this author.

Mostly loved

Very well written and narrated, I could hardly put it down. Thank you for a great story

Loved it

The story is an interesting twist on the end of the world as we know it.

I found the dialogue and personal issues reminiscent of the day dreams of an eight grader during a boring English class.

Nevertheless I could jump ahead and miss most of the cringe worth conversations. Worth the read but won’t be moving on to subsequent books in the series.

Good read even if the dialogue is a little juvenile

This was a great story with good characters, plenty of action, and the triumphs of a true underdog. Loved every minute of it.

Excellent to the end.

If Bernard Cornwell and Robert Jordan collaborated on a series it could not be any better than N. C. Reed’s Black Sheep of Soulan. Parno and crew take you down an exciting path struggling to not fall off the edge of the cliff. The narrator Eric Michael Summerer makes for a great listen.

One of the best series I’ve read or listened to.
