Fantastic book with a few hiccups
Reviewed: 04-04-21
So after listening to this book as often as I could I finally managed to finish it. I was so excited about this book that I decided to listen to the first book so I could come in fresh. This is an amazing book; however, there are a few problems and I want to start with those. The primary villain in this book is subpar at best. It starts off a little ominous and foreboding which is fine, but we know so little of this character that when he finally makes his appearance it falls flat. I was way more invested in the other goings-on in the book than the reveal and inevitable fight with the villain. It's definitely not bad by any stretch, but with the way it jumps from one perspective to the next it was very jolting and I had no real investment. This is the second problem towards the end of the book. There are numerous interruptions to what I feel are the climb up to the climax. It kind of kills the momentum and resulted in me rewinding more than few times to make sure I didn't miss some important junction. I thought I had dozed off or failed to pay attention closely enough cause I didn't know where the story was. Some of them are cool and interesting and give a nice perspective that we may not normally see, but if they're not primary characters and they're not reoccurring I don't need multiple examples. Then there's the evil plan by the villain. I mean if I had the time that this person had I could come up with a better plot that's more insidious and evil. Perhaps with a lot less risk and more fun. This also kind of killed the mood for me. Last but not least in my opinion is the distinct lack of romance. Look, I didn't come to this book for romance or steamy couplings. Just drop a little hint of something happening. I don't need explicit. I don't need details, but come on. I won't say more but I think many people will understand what I mean.
As for the good things. I could go on for a while talking about the good things. They outnumber the bad things by such a considerable margin that it's more than forgivable. Cause I'll be honest I nitpick things and playing the devil's advocate for things I dislike is much easier. Trying to think of all the things I love is like trying to corral a river. Too much to handle. The characters have good development. Not great mind you but decent. The plot moves forward at a decent clip without getting too bogged down excepting the last nine hours or so. There's history revealed, lore to be loved, facts to delve into, and sweet moments that will make you smile ear to ear. The action is amazing and I love the fights. Seriously, this guy can write action sequences like few others. This book series is turning out to be one of my favorite and I can't recommend it enough for you to listen to this book. Listen to it, do it now, use your credits or pay for it. You need this book in your life yesterday. Preferably the day of release.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Loved the book, grear narrator, great story, needed a bit more action though. Still I feel it kept the balance really well. You just expect more action when the book is all about super heroes. Worth every credit though and Im pretty picky.

What are you doing reading this? Buy the book and listen to it already!
What? You need more? Fine.
Brandon Sanderson delivers again with an original story that plays on every emotion you have. If you're not familiar with his work then allow me to welcome you into the fold. This captivating story follows the path a young girl just entering adulthood takes to prove her bravery, and attempts to accept that it's ok to be afraid. An all too brief summarization, I'll admit, that won't do the book justice because you should just listen to it and understand that this book is awesome. My only criticism is that Kate Reading isn't narrating this book, and that is only a mild rebuke as Suzy Jackson performs wonderfully.

Story
Behind its walls, the Convent of Sweet Mercy has trained young girls to hone their skills for centuries. In Mystic Class, Novice Nona Grey has begun to learn the secrets of the universe. But so often even the deepest truths just make our choices harder. Before she leaves the convent, Nona must choose which order to dedicate herself to - and whether her path will lead to a life of prayer and service or one of the blade and the fist. All that stands between her and these choices are the pride of a thwarted assassin, the designs of a would-be empress wielding the Inquisition like a knife, and the vengeance of the empire's richest lord.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is definitely a book, and a series, that I would recommend to my friends and family to read. The characters feel like individuals, and it keeps you coming back for more. I went through this book last night and this morning so it will keep you hooked!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sister cage is by far one of my favorite characters along with the new companion in the story that you'll learn more about. She further evolves in this story with a more mature attitude, but I wish that her character was a tiny bit more fleshed out with her friends.
Which scene was your favorite?
Perhaps my favorite scene in this book would be when they were in a certain location where 3 of our characters lives were on the line, and someone just busts out the whoop #$%. It was a truly epic moment I wish was played on a bit more.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I tried to listen to this book all in one sitting, but at 15 hours long it's a bit hard to do. Granted I'm sure when I come back to listen to it a second time I'll probably start at the beginning of my day and finish it!
Any additional comments?
Overall this story gives us more of the same from the first book. If you liked the first book then you need to pick this up because it will give you everything you want from it. There is definitely a growth to the characters as it picks up beyond where the first book left off, but sadly it doesn't truly expand on the relationship between everyone there at Sweet Mercy. It did a fine job to be sure, but I would have liked it to be more fleshed out. The action and the story of this book are some of the best, and I have been waiting for this release for some time. I had it marked on my calendar... I have others on my calendar as well. Doors of stone is set for some time in 2099. So if you want action, great characters, clever thinking, and a great story pick up this book.

At first I wasn't too sure how I felt about it since it moved rather quickly, but soon I fell into it and couldn't stop listening. The story was great, and it doesn't waste your time with excess filler. Characters all felt like individuals, and no one really faded into the background. Nick of course did a great job narrating the story like he always does. Buy this book, do it now, seriously. Take it from the guy who literally listens to books all day long.

The beginning was a bit too fast paced, and as a result I felt jostled around and I kept pausing it and returning a few days later. After the first part is over it finds the right pace, and the story develops beautifully after that. Worth listening to for sure! This is a book I will most definitely listen to again, and I'm definitely buying the next book

The way the author writes is incredoble, and I love reading his books. I will say that this book took a long path through a lot of nothing, but I wouldn't be the least surprised to find out that it impacts the story later on. Because that's how he writes. I give it 4.5 stars overall! Also, the ending will leave you dying. Have fun!
