Story
It began as their dream home...but soon became their worst nightmare. From award-winning writer Brandon Massey comes a riveting thriller of the supernatural invading the lives of an ordinary family. Len and Olivia Bowden had been seeking the ideal home in which to raise their daughter, Kennedy. The classic Victorian in a historic Atlanta neighborhood had everything they were looking for: lots of room in which to grow, friendly neighbors, and best of all, a bargain price, the result of a bank foreclosure. Hardly able to believe their good fortune, they move in and begin making plans for a ...

PLEASE no more AI narration…
Reviewed: 02-15-24
Toward the end of 2023, I noticed that the majority of newly released horror and scifi audible options were utilizing AI generated narration. I’ve given this format three separate chances, and i can confidently state that it’s absolutely unbearable. The multitude of human nuances that cannot be taught to a computer program are on full display here… the nature of “reading” vs “understanding” means that colloquialisms, accents, inflection, speech patterns and other uniquely human attributes are lost, which surprisingly makes the stories difficult to follow. The most glaring annoyance might be the AI’s inability to process onomatopoeia, reading a sentence like “Jenny harshly hissed ‘PSSSSSST’…” as “Jenny harshly hissed pea ess ess ess ess ess ess tee…” Finally, it bears mentioning that im left deeply disappointed in audible for utilizing this sort of substandard corner cutting to avoid paying the skilled human voice artists who bring stories to life (and who are responsible for Audible’s very existence and success) Stories written by humans for humans require a human voice. I really hope audible stops this nonsense soon.

Story
Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans - though no one calls them that anymore. His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the "Transition". Now, eating human meat - "special meat" - is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.

Beautifully written, an absolutely mesmerizing narrative on human nature, consumerism and compassion in a post capitalist society. The best book I’ve read this year.

Worst recording I’ve ever heard
Reviewed: 06-15-22
While the story was decent, I was genuinely distracted by the poor audio quality of the recording! It was shockingly bad. I wish I would have listened to the preview before downloading. Otherwise the story was fine and narration was outstanding despite the garbage audio.

But it is hard to stay indoors: Cabin fever sets in, and the mist can be beguiling too. Eventually only six remain. Like the rest of the townspeople, Pete has nowhere else to go. After he rescues a stranded psychic from a terrible fate, he’s given a warning: He will be dead by solstice unless he leaves town - soon.

The most interesting horror novel I’ve read in ages!
Reviewed: 10-23-20
I consume horror fiction. I am rarely surprised when it comes to new books. But this story grabbed me from the start and never let go. Absolutely engrossing, absolutely original, tragic, beautiful.... not to mention the flawless performance of the narrator! Easily one of my favorite books I’ve read this year.

It’s been a while since a book has genuinely gotten under my skin, but this one certainly did the job! A slow burn with plenty of character development that only serves to better humanize the victims of the town’s ancient evil, this is a great new story for fans of Jackson and early King.

Horribly written (to a laughable degree), horribly read. I couldn’t even get halfway through before turning it off for good. Don’t waste your credit on this bit of junior high level fiction.
