Kathleen became my go to author for romance 50 years ago. Like fine wine her tales age well. I have waited a long time for the audible to finally publish this and her books. AUDIBLE did not disappoint. Now I must get on to my 2nd favorite of her books.

Drew Danner, a crime novelist with a house off L.A.'s storied Mulholland Drive, awakens in a hospital bed with a scar on his head and no memory of being found convulsing over his ex-fiancee's body the previous night. He was discovered holding a knife, her blood beneath his nails. He himself doesn't know whether he's guilty or innocent. To reconstruct the story, the writer must now become the protagonist, searching the corridors of his life and the city he loves.

I pretty much knew the 'one' by the middle of the story. But the maze for the motive was pleasantly different.
I enjoyed the reader especially. his laid-back style so suited this story.

this story is as relevant now as when first published.
for myself RMB writes the mystery portion with SP the philosophical portions.
and anyone from the 60s will recognize MM's ghost story from its a popular song. there are a lot of hidden gems here, hats off for this flashback to my teenage years. wonder which came first historically. probably the British cat.
am looking forward to renewing a favorite series of books.

I have read these first 5 books through my twice . Especially during these times, I find it a microcosm of OUR BELOVED USA.
I caught some of the what I perceive the author's central meaning. (the first time through i mainly wanted to know who lived and how life as we know it finished) but I also caught a glimmer of something else.
in the second reading I let go and entered. this time frame. the words brought to life (by narrative) was so descriptive from sun rise to moon light scenes brought me into the story. the military and political were no surprise. but the fight to save humans by constantly drawing attention not only the blood and gore but most especially into the world behind the people. what they thought and the hows and whys they acted. as they did. not counting the inhuman ones. it represents the true of our complex natures.
this story immersed me into a world i never want to experience. it shows humans for who they are now. heroes, those who think their way is the only way, but are mostly good and evil powerful people.
narrative i have heard better and a lot worse PB did good.
most of all my thanks go to the NSS for a thought provoking book and a great story.
