Story
Lee Gulliver never thought she’d find herself living on the streets—no one ever does—but when her restaurant fails, and she falls deeper into debt, she leaves her old life behind with nothing but her clothes and her Toyota Corolla. In Seattle, she parks in a secluded spot by the beach to lay low and plan her next move—until early one morning, she sees a sobbing woman throw herself into the ocean. Lee hauls the woman back to the surface, but instead of appreciation, she is met with fury.

Something’s was missing
Reviewed: 05-30-24
The overall story was good, the twists were good, though I guessed all of them before they were revealed, it still kept me engaged. But it just felt shallow, like so much was left unanswered with a few characters in the book. It could have been so good, but just missed the mark and left me saying “huh?” when it ended.

Story
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

Could be really great if...

The author should go back through and remove 75% of the COVID references. It would be the same story line, still allowing for some COVID references (though it would be better without any of the COVID references at all) without COVID taking over most of the first half of the book. It was constant and really didn't add to the story at all. I get that it was written during that time, but I think most of us would like to escape from that politically divided and horrible time when we read books. It was seriously excessive and over the top it made it hard to listen to. Otherwise, a great story and hard to put down.

Story
Some places seem too beautiful to be touched by horror. Summit Lake, nestled in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, is that kind of place. But two weeks ago, Becca Eckersley, a first-year law student and daughter of a powerful attorney, was brutally murdered there. Now the town is reeling with grief, and the police are baffled.

The writing is really not great, the story could have been good with better writing and more depth of the character and relationship development. It's superficial and kinda weird. I also knew who the killer was halfway through, it was pretty obvious actually.

Far-fetched fr.
I can look past most things when books are far fetched. But when the main character, who isn’t a free diver, free dived over 70 feet and holds her breath for minutes at a time, yeah no. There’s just too much you can’t look past. The beginning is good. Then it gets dumb.

Are other reviewers even reading the same book?!
Reviewed: 10-25-22
The ONLY good thing about this book is the performance. The narration was great. Everything else was...terrible. I truly cannot understand people saying this is an amazing book. I wanted to stop listening less than halfway through, but decided based on other reviews to stick it out in case it took a turn. It didn't. The characters were all terrible. No one can have a "great marriage" when the son of an evil witch doesn't have a backbone. He literally denied his own wife's feelings through the entire book. There were just so many annoying things, I wanted to reach through to book and tell each and every character to seriously grow up. Don't waste your time.

Over the top sex scenes
Reviewed: 08-05-22
I wanted to like this. And I really think I could have. I like the characters and the premise. The narrator was too old for these characters but did a good job at the accents. I feel like half this book was about sex though. I don't mind sex scenes, even some graphic ones, but ones that drag on and on and get so into details and use the word "pussy" 100 times are just too much. It was more porn than a cute story honestly, and I am not a prude by any sense of the imagination.

Nothing new here, if you read Lizzy Gardner you basically read this already. So similar it's annoying. Also, how many times in one story could someone be threatened with a gun? It's too far-fetched.

Amber Patterson is fed up. She's tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more - a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted. To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne - a socialite and philanthropist - and her real-estate mogul husband, Jackson, are a couple straight out of a fairy tale. Amber's envy could eat her alive...if she didn't have a plan.

So at first, I hated it. Similar to what other reviewers have said, it took so long to begin to like it. I almost stopped listening because the first part was so horribly written and narrated, but I knew others had said they got hooked after a while so I stayed the course. I saw the twist coming, had a feeling it was something like that. The last half I wanted to keep listening and not put it down. I just wish the first half was narrated better, it literally sounds like someone is jokingly reading a script to be funnily bad. But it picks up after that.
