About this listen

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

For a Florida police diver, danger rises to the surface in an adventurous thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Naturalist.

Coming from scandalous Florida treasure hunters and drug smugglers, Sloan McPherson is forging her own path, for herself and for her daughter, out from under her family’s shadow. An auxiliary officer for Lauderdale Shores PD, she’s the go-to diver for evidence recovery. Then Sloan finds a fresh kill floating in a canal - a woman whose murky history collides with Sloan’s. Their troubling ties are making Sloan less a potential witness than a suspect. And her colleagues aren’t the only ones following every move she makes. So is the killer.

Stalked by an assassin, pitted against a ruthless cartel searching for a lost fortune, and under watch within her ranks, Sloan has only one ally: the legendary DEA agent who put Sloan’s uncle behind bars. He knows just how deep corruption runs - and the kind of danger Sloan is in. To stay alive, Sloan must stay one step ahead of her enemies - both known and unknown - and a growing conspiracy designed to pull her under.

really good thriller/detective novel

Book #2 for 2021: another thriller. This one was also quite good - it didn't lull in the middle like The House Guest so it earned 4 stars which is pretty much my max. I hold 5 stars to 10% of my reads so it really means something.

This is more of a detective novel. The protagonist is a female scavenger scuba diver who contracts for the local police department. On a dive, a dead body gets tossed into the water in her area and then all sorts of weird things happen. Multiple agencies start tailing her, she gets held illegally by the DEA, and she finds out she knew the victim. UH OH.

Sloane, the main character, partners up with a cop she has hated her whole life because he put away her uncle. Together, the two of them piece together an elaborate scheme involving drugs (of course), dirty politicians (double of course) but some interesting twists that are related to her family's longtime history in adventuring on and in the sea. Oh yeah, the story is set in Florida so the ocean is warm, welcoming, and sinister.

I recommend this book for thriller and detective novel fans. Also, I am looking forward to the second novel in this series, scheduled to come out later in 2021.

A New Series?

This is an interesting exploration for Mayne. It has all the elements of a good series; however it lacks the originality that graced his previous characters and plots in The Naturalist and Jessica Blackwood series. Hoping to see more of these characters, but will give the sequel to this one a look.

Pulled an All Nighter!

Be prepared to push yourself to read this book in one day! The Girl Beneath the Sea is fast pace, action filled and totally engaging! I stumbled across this book on Kindle Unlimited for free and listened through Audible. The second book in the series does not come out until February 2021 so now I wait!

Excellent

I had not read any other Andrew Mayne's books and I see that this was Book 1 in hopefully a great series.
The story is good with interesting characters, I'm ready for book 2 in the new UIA Unit.
Narrator did a great job.

Love, Love, LOVE this book!!

Other reviews are correct Andrew Mayne hit this one out of the park! I have listened to most of Mayne’s previous books. He is a skill author with a knack for creating original plots and unique characters. His writing keeps getting better and better. I’m very glad he has started a new series, as I felt the Naturalist series had run it’s course especially by the end of Dark Pattern.

His characters have depth and are very likable. Sloan McPherson is a strong female lead who is impossible not to root for throughout this novel. I’m left wanting a whole lot more of her alpha personality. I also fell in love with Mayne’s main male character, George Solar, who happened to bust Sloan’s uncle years before on drug charges. I’m eager to see where book two will take these characters next. I just wish we didn’t have to wait until Feb 2021 to find out!

The narration is fantastic. Susannah Jones is a new narrator to me and I was worried about her higher pitched voice - - however my concerns were needless. I will be looking into her other work as she’s able to narrate male characters very good. Not all females have this skill.

If you have Kindle Unlimited then get this book on Amazon. If you do not, then rest assured you’re Audible credit will not be wasted.

Great Narrator

Fun story. a bit predictable in terms of outcome but an unusual premise and well told story.
The narrator is fantastic and gives each character life. I'm off to find more narrated by her.

great story

too much voice inflection from narrator was distracting and made story seem insincere. I almost stopped listening but the writing kept me coming back.

Refreshingly fun

Detective fiction isn’t my favorite but this author transcends the genre with humor and lightheartedness, making the plot mechanics of cops chasing drug lords and corrupt black op dudes fun and engaging.
