Story
Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

The narrator makes this story.

It took me awhile to get into this book. I didn’t really get into the story and was not necessarily a fan of the main character. HOWEVER, the narrator brought this book to life. At the end of the day, I was entertained and felt I got my money’s worth of enjoyment. This narrator was perfect for the story. This book is most enjoyed as an audio book in my opinion.

The only reason I have only 4 stars for performance is that I think I would have preferred a masculine voice for the male characters.

I don’t know when I’ve ever enjoyed a series as much as I enjoyed these books. I couldn’t wait to hear more. These stories bring the Old Testament to life. I wondered if it’s right to add words to a story from the Bible but I’ve settled in my mind that words were not added to the Bible but stories from the Bible were simply made into novels that helped me understand life in the Old Testament times.

Story
Before men ruled the earth, there were wolves. Once abundant in North America, these majestic creatures were hunted to near extinction in the lower 48 states by the 1920s. But in recent decades, conservationists have brought wolves back to the Rockies, igniting a battle over the very soul of the West. With novelistic detail, Nate Blakeslee tells the gripping story of one of these wolves, O-Six, a charismatic alpha female named for the year of her birth.

If you love wolves . . . I don't.

I don't remember why I bought this book but I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was in the beginning. I realized that the most enjoyable things about the book were the author's storytelling ability and the talent of the narrator. My problems with the book: (1) I am not particularly an animal lover so all the crying over wolves was lost on me; and (2) the book's value was in the first-third. The last two thirds of the book was torture for me because it was the same stuff over, and over, with different wolf numbers. Just too long for my liking. Perhaps, Twitter really has shortened our attention spans.

I love historical fiction but this was a little long for me.
Reviewed: 02-19-18
This may not have felt so long but because it was the stories of five siblings it felt too long. The first half of the book I couldn’t keep the sibling stories straight and almost stopped listening. Second half moved a little faster. I think it’s good for us to read the stories. So for that reason, this is a good read. Narrator did great job with accents but it was obvious she was reading and not telling a story. If you haven’t read much about the holocaust, this is a good read.

I enjoyed the historical fiction and the way the author used faith in a realistic way in the story. I read fiction for entertainment, not for a discussion of social issues. While these are certainly issues worthy of discussion, I don’t like fiction (entertainment) used to present a viewpoint, regardless of the social issue. These issues should be addressed, but not in something billed as entertainment.

I loved the characters, the story, the humor and the narration was perhaps best I've heard. I'm not a Harry Potter fan so all the HP references were lost on me. And there were times I tired of the make believe, fairy tale stuff, but this author is so amazing I still enjoyed this book immensely. I listened at .75 speed so I wouldn't miss a word. This book was absolutely DELIGHTFUL!! And, for one to fully enjoy it, the audiobook is the way to go. The characters come to life.

Entrepreneurs have long been taught that to be successful, they need to spend months perfecting a business plan and finding investors before they can finally launch their business. But with the marketplace changing at lightning speed, this notion is not only outdated - it's costly. There's no point to building a business in a bubble. Today’s entrepreneurs must embrace the idea of "failing fast."

Story
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

Would you try another book from Alan Bradley and/or Jayne Entwistle?
I bought it based on all the positive reviews, but by Chapter 2 I couldn't listen anymore. Seemed silly and like it was for 10 year old girls. I suspect it would have gotten better, based on the number of very positive reviews, but I couldn't wait it out. I found myself rewinding repeatedly because my mind would wander and I just couldn't get used to the voice of the narrator. Just wasn't for me.
