Robotic Narrator & Dumb Story
Reviewed: 05-25-25
This book was so hard to get into! The narrator has a whiny robotic voice that makes me think I’d rather listen to Alexa read this book to me.
I read another of Kate White’s books and I really liked it! This one was so stupid. Not sure of the amazing twist others mentioned, just a very predictable end. Glad it was on sale, think I know why though…

I don’t know what the other reviews loved so much about this book. I thought the “twist” was very obvious from the beginning and it was more like a drama than a thriller. Luckily I got it on sale and didn’t waste a credit or too much money.

Too Long
Reviewed: 04-22-25
I just finished another book by Mary Kubica and really liked it, so I bought this one. Don’t!
Let me preface this by saying I LOVE a long book, especially when I have a long roadtrip like I did this week. That said, this book could be about 2-3 hours long total! There was so much unnecessary dialogue in this book.
And the narrator has zero emotion or inflection. It’s just the same boring tone throughout the whole book and it never gets better. Skip this one or just listen to the first 3 chapters, and maybe the last 5.

So much complaining! Skip this book!!!
Reviewed: 09-25-24
I’m going to start with I really like Freida’s books and have listened to a lot of them. But this one is just miserable! It’s all about unhappy wives that complain nonstop about their husbands. On top of that, it’s has a horrible narrator that sometimes acts robotically and other times has these annoying pauses, even though I have it sped up 1.5x. And her inflection doesn’t change, it’s just so whiney.
I still have over an hour and a half left and I can’t finish it. So glad I didn’t waste a credit on this one!

Don’t Buy This Book
Reviewed: 08-30-24
This book was free, and if it hadn’t been, I would have been so upset with wasting a credit. The story dragged out, but I was surprised I had the suspect wrong. Other than that, it was boring, whiney, and amateurish. Definitely not worth a credit!
Also, the narrator sometimes pronounced bunker correctly, and other times called it a bonker.
I am shocked this author was recommended for being similar to Karen Slaughter, who I LOVE! Not even a close similarity other than the genre.

Everyone thinks Emmy Dockery is crazy. Obsessed with finding the link between hundreds of unsolved cases, Emmy has taken leave from her job as an FBI researcher. Now all she has are the newspaper clippings that wallpaper her bedroom, and her recurring nightmares of an all-consuming fire. Not even Emmy's ex-boyfriend, field agent Harrison "Books" Bookman, will believe her that hundreds of kidnappings, rapes, and murders are all connected.

I really like both of these authors so I was really bummed with this book. It was annoying, the male narrator was OVERLY dramatic and pronounced things incorrectly, and the female character was unbelievable and complained so much. I am genuinely surprised at how much I didn’t like this book from these two great authors!
I finished it because I paid for it and I had just returned another title, otherwise I would have returned it.

When the rules turn deadly, winning is everything. Only available from Audible, a gripping psychological thriller from the author of Silent Child, Saving April, and The Broken Ones. Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Lisa Jewell and Paula Hawkins. The perfect couple. The perfect marriage. The perfect game. Effie and Ben May have everything. Success. Beauty. Glamour. But beneath the charming smiles and expensive clothes, a twisted game is in progress. A game for which only they know the rules.

Story
The double murder of a married couple in a small Washington town draws FBI forensic linguist Raisa Susanto into an investigation that mirrors a decades-old crime. Twenty-five years ago—to the day—Alex Parker murdered his parents, then took his own life, leaving behind a note admitting everything. Raisa, paired with forensic psychologist Callum Kilkenny, uses her skills to read between the lines. Especially now that paranoid postings on a conspiracy thread suggest that Alex was a victim himself.

Amateur Writing
Reviewed: 07-25-24
I do not recommend this book at all. It’s written very amateurish and performed nearly the same, although the narrator is better than the writer.
The writer acts like the FBI agents on the case are idiots or small town cops on their first case, then jumps to very specific linguistic descriptions. The only reason I’m finishing is because I can’t return this one and I bought it on sale.
