An outstanding presentation
Reviewed: 05-30-24
The story is incredibly simple, but its underlying concepts are profound. As a writer, I was also awed by the way he handled conversations between the characters. In every case, it was like overhearing people in real life situations. Some of the credit for that goes to the narrator. He was outstanding!

Not a mystery ... more a crime comedy

I was hoping to take part in a mystery when I listened to this, but it's really more of a crime comedy. Lots of misdirection before solutions are provided out of the blue.

Old now and blind, Rossiter was trying desperately to hold on to a small ranch to support his daughter, Barbara. Suddenly Talon found himself in the middle of a range war, siding with the man he’d marked for payback. But had Rossiter really changed? And could his daughter be trusted by either of them? For Milo, getting to the truth meant a long hard fight to separate his enemies from his friends - and forgiveness from revenge.

Mr. Andrews, please do ALL of the L'Amour westerns
Reviewed: 05-05-23
The characters and plot of this book are excellent, but it's MacLeod Andrews performance that earns the five-star rating. His voice is perfect for a traditional western story of this kind. Unfortunately for me, I'm spoiled now. I obtained the other book by L'Amour he reads (Flint), but in listening through the samples of the other L'Amour westerns on Audible, I can't find a reader that comes close to his talent. Please, please, please send more work his way Audible. For an audiobook fan like me, the reader's performance is everything, and Andrews has the energy, pacing and clarity of voice that makes a good book great and a great book unforgettable.

Story
Val Darrant was just four years old the snowy night his mother abandoned him. But instead of meeting a lonely death, he met Will Reilly - a gentleman, a gambler, and a worldly, self-taught scholar. For 10 years they each were all the family the other had, traveling from dusty American boomtowns to the glittering cities of Belle Époque Europe - until the day Reilly’s luck ran out in a roar of gunfire. But it wasn’t a gambling brawl or a pack of thieves that sealed Will’s fate. It was a far more complex story that Val would soon uncover.

Expect a fast-draw ending ... lightning fast!
Reviewed: 04-17-23
While the story feels old fashioned, you would expect that, and you'll come to enjoy the simplicity and classic nature of it. I love Jeff Bridges' TRUE GRIT character and the other western figures he has depicted in movies, and I expected something similar from his brother. Beau doesn't disappoint, though things do get a little rocky when he tries to do other accents (Irish, for example). But the real star-killer for me was the ending. It was satisfying ... but happened so fast that it was impossible to savor the "justice" of it. This book would have been so much better if the last part had been covered in several chapters and where the explanation of what happened to certain key characters could have been explored further. Still, a good western yarn with a few historical figures sprinkled in to make it feel realistic. I enjoyed it for that reason alone.

The Scavenger species are circling. It is, truly, provably, the End Days for the Gzilt civilization. An ancient people, organized on military principles and yet almost perversely peaceful, the Gzilt helped set up the Culture 10,000 years earlier and were very nearly one of its founding societies, deciding not to join only at the last moment. Now they've made the collective decision to follow the well-trodden path of millions of other civilizations; they are going to Sublime, elevating themselves to a new and almost infinitely more rich and complex existence.

This book is a fascinating road trip. but it literally ends up going nowhere. Even the key characters seem to lose interest in what the have accomplished by "the end" -- if you can even call it an ending. How disappointing! That said, the characters are great and the reader was excellent. Too bad it was all for nothing and nothingness.

What a strange book!
Reviewed: 12-30-22
There's no denying this book is beautifully written or that having the author read it was an inspired choice, but it's also the most disjointed and therefore least convincing book I've ever "read" on an animal or aspect of nature. The author jumps from point to point and topic to topic without even trying to provide reasonable transitions between them. It reminded me of listening to an old man or young kid ramble through life events, odd facts, scientific details, human interest stories and personal viewpoints without any effort to help you make sense of how any of it made one cohesive point. Entertaining to some, I suppose, but I was hoping for much more given his title's claim.

Full of procedural info, weak on drama
Reviewed: 11-14-22
Can a story be too realistic? Apparently. This one desperately needs more drama. Far too much time is spent on character development and the mundane politics and procedures in policing in the UK. Well written perhaps, but it's unlikely to hold your interest for long.

A heart-stopping crime thriller from the author of three consecutive No. 1 bestsellers, including Birthdays for the Dead and the DI Logan McRae series. He's back... Eight years ago, ‘The Inside Man' murdered four women and left three more in critical condition - all of them with their stomachs slit open and a plastic doll stitched inside. And then the killer just … disappeared. Ash Henderson was a Detective Inspector on the initial investigation, but a lot can change in eight years.

A forced plot rarely rings true
Reviewed: 10-05-22
I've enjoyed other books by this author, but I felt this one missed the mark, mostly because the actions of the characters felt unnatural, as if the were fulfilling a role in a plot rather than living real lives. That can be excused if the plot itself is extraordinarily compelling, but this one wasn't.
