About this listen

Val Darrant was just four years old the snowy night his mother abandoned him. But instead of meeting a lonely death, he met Will Reilly - a gentleman, a gambler, and a worldly, self-taught scholar. For 10 years they each were all the family the other had, traveling from dusty American boomtowns to the glittering cities of Belle Époque Europe - until the day Reilly’s luck ran out in a roar of gunfire.

But it wasn’t a gambling brawl or a pack of thieves that sealed Will’s fate. It was a far more complex story that Val would soon uncover - one that would bring him face-to-face with the one person he least wants to see: his mother. With the help of a beautiful, street-smart rancher and the woman who was Will Reilly’s lost love, Val must close this last cruel chapter of his past before he can turn the page on an uncertain future.

One of my favorite all time books. <br />

I've read and/or listened to it many times. Each time like visiting with an old friend. If you haven't, you should.

Terrible performance

Honestly the narrator’s performance was terrible. He was monotone the whole time, he was just reading the words, not any performance to it at all really. Good story though.

Get Lost in This Book

Four year old Val Durrant's mother orders his execution via dumping him out in freezing temperatures. Instead, Val's step father leaves him with young gambler Will Reilly who feels it's fate and that he must try his best to raise Val right. As they adventure east, west and across to Europe, he teaches Val friendship, love, loyalty, honor and a healthy dose of street smarts. Val grows up to be a kind and intelligent man but he's no fool. He makes smart decisions and life works out for him and we get a front row seat to his successes.

I loved this book; I was captivated within the first 2 minutes of the listen. I was so absorbed I would arrive at work and not remember the commute. This book was fast paced and the characters were interesting, including the bad people.

Beau Bridges was a great narrator of men, particularly the grisled hardened type. Beau was totally engaged with every character and his voice stayed strong the whole time. There are not many females that had dialogue in the book, which was good since Beau made every woman, including the young and beautiful, sound like an old granny who hangs out on the back porch, smoking tobackee.

This is one of the best books I've read in the last year.
