Story
David Roberts describes the culture of the Anasazi - the name means "enemy ancestors" in Navajo - who once inhabited the Colorado Plateau and whose modern descendants are the Hopi Indians of Arizona. Archaeologists, Roberts writes, have been puzzling over the Anasazi for more than a century, trying to determine the environmental and cultural stresses that caused their society to collapse 700 years ago. He guides us through controversies in the historical record, among them the haunting question of whether the Anasazi committed acts of cannibalism.

great book, the author does a great job of navigating the somewhat precarious balance between cultural and environmental sensitivity and thrill of archeological discovery and adventure. this book will make you want to get outside!

Story
Our ancestors crossed deserts, mountains, and oceans without even a whisper of what anyone today might consider modern technology. Those feats of endurance now seem impossible in an age where we take comfort for granted. But what if we could regain some of our lost evolutionary strength by simulating the environmental conditions of our forbears? Investigative journalist and anthropologist Scott Carney takes up the challenge to find out: Can we hack our bodies and use the environment to stimulate our inner biology?

great read

if your interested in the wim Hoff method this is a great down to earth resource. Carney tells it exactly how it is without the hero worship that discredits a lot of similar books. Carney approaches the subject from a skeptics view Which (for me at least) lends a lot of credibility. He includes a lot of science and research but still manages to maintain a very readable, entertaining pace that doesn't bog down with too much medical jargon.

Story
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

I Love Bryson's writing. This book is essentially the history of scientific discovery, which admittedly sounds very dull. However Bryson's approach to the subject is both riveting and hilarious. this is one of the best reads/listens I've had in a while. If you enjoy reading history or science you will love this book.
