I enjoyed this story but it’s finally beginning to wear a little thin. The main character James McGill never seems to advance or develop more. I am sometimes having trouble separating this main character from the same in other series by this same author. I guess I will have to see if that occurs in future works

Story
When Van gains rank as a Peacemaker, he becomes a bigger target for the criminals scattered among the stars. And he wouldn’t have it any other way. On a distant world under an alien sun, hunters and their companions—the Rovan—bond in a ritual as old as their civilization. But one of the hunters is missing, and Van, along with his growing crew, knows where to look. Climbing up into the rarified air of the super-rich, Van uncovers a new enemy: The Fade. And they are as cruel as the stars are many.

Story
Although badly scarred and down to his last kidney after the previous caper, Happy Doll is back in business. When a beguiling young woman turns up at his door, it’s Doll’s past that comes knocking. Mary DeAngelo is searching for her estranged mother, Ines Candle—a singular and troubled woman Doll once loved. The last he’d seen her she’d been near-death: arms slit like envelopes. Now, years later, Mary claims Ines is alive and recently made contact—only to disappear once again. Although his psychoanalyst would discourage it, Doll takes the case, desperate to see Ines again.

Another good listen from and by this author
Reviewed: 09-07-22
Our hapless hero and first person narrator again seems to lead with his face. Fortunately the face only receives lacerations from multiple sources adding to its scared story. The heavy blunt trauma is directed elsewhere without fatal results. Extra good character development. The story ends abruptly. Maybe to be picked up in the next story. Hopefully the main character will develop some insight and judgment on tactics plus will reap some financial security

Story
Happy Doll is a charming, if occasionally inexpert, private detective living just one sheer cliff drop beneath the Hollywood sign with his beloved half-Chihuahua half-Terrier, George. A veteran of both the Navy and LAPD, Doll supplements his meager income as a P.I. by working through the night at a local Thai spa that offers its clients a number of special services. Armed with his 16-inch steel telescopic baton, biting dry humor, and just a bit of a hero complex, the ex-cop sets out to protect the women who work there from clients who have trouble understanding the word "no".

Early In March 2022 too intense to finish cheated went to end
Reviewed: 03-03-22
Here and now with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on going I found this story too intense and had to extricate myself from it. It all felt too close to current reality to remain an entertaining listen / read. Apparently my looking to Sci-fi for some form of escapist entertainment is wrong for me. The author did quite the job of dragging me through the so called depths of despair. Call me soft headed and worse but that is my visceral reaction.

Reviewed: 11-27-21
I have to admit to listeing to to the last 4 or so chapters a second time. Yes many plot lines were resolved with enough left open for more. I am interested in hearing more but will resolve to be less distracted while listening. Maybe comprehend more the first time through.

Reviewed: 11-05-21
This story felt originally slightly formulaic to the genre but then picked up. Some of the story characters felt recycled from similar quest stories. That did lend an air of revisiting some long not seen friends. I assume there’s a volume two and more?

Story
In the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump, Congressman Adam Schiff had already been sounding the alarm over the resurgence of autocracy around the world, and the threat this posed to the United States. But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

Continued trouble ahead, are Republicans the new Iraqi Baathist.
Reviewed: 10-31-21
I have recently listened to and completed Peril and other similar books I certainly have a sense of deja vu. All Americans were introduced to the Baathist in the Iraqi wars. A political party that was population wise a minority with very conservative group that controls a larger majority with whatever violence is necessary. Violence in both political and domestic terrorism. Sounds like the current US Republican Party under McConnell and Trump.

Over the years I have both read and listened to Tom Clancy military techno thrillers plus the various movies based .. . This time around I was astounded by the sheer amount CRPG foisted onto us listeners. I reckon this may well be a combination of Clancy and Greeny. No more future time will be spent listening to either of these writers. They're off my wish list
