Story
At the root of human conflict is our fundamental misunderstanding of who we are. The illusion that we are isolated beings, unconnected to the rest of the universe, has led us to view the “outside” world with hostility, and has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world. To help us understand that the self is in fact the root and ground of the universe, Alan Watts provides us with a much-needed answer to the problem of personal identity, distilling and adapting the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta.

Story
Now in a third edition, Robert M. Sapolsky's acclaimed and successful Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers features new chapters on how stress affects sleep and addiction, as well as new insights into anxiety and personality disorder and the impact of spirituality on managing stress. As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer.

Very heavy on the science and balanced well with humor and insight. Full of practical ideas and real details / studies, always with the caveats of true science and not wild jumps to conclusions. Also, very well narrated. Highly recommended!

Story
A new epidemic is sweeping the country. Some people call it ADHD, scatter brain, or brain fog. Some simply say they just don't feel like themselves - and haven't for a long time. People are thinking and feeling worse than ever. Why? Because our brains are not getting the support they need to produce the essential brain chemicals that keep us energized, calm, focused, and inspired.

Excellent and very practical

Full of extremely practical and powerful small behaviors and exercises that you can easily incorporate either at your own pace or in his full 3-week plan (all clearly laid out at the end of the book). This book is great for someone just starting their wellness journey and I particularly appreciated the whole-person approach: dietary, mindset, lifestyle, spiritual (not necessarily religious). Highly recommended!

Story
Procrastination is an almost universal human experience. While many people attribute procrastination to laziness or a lack of drive, our real motivations to push back and delay important activities and decisions are more complicated than personal weakness. The truth is that humans are well-adapted for basic survival, but they are not so great at managing the stresses and expectations of modern life without a little help.

Here is an entirely new side of Kurt Vonnegut, Vonnegut as a teacher of writing. Of course he's given us glimpses before, with aphorisms and short essays and articles and in his speeches. But never before has an entire book been devoted to Kurt Vonnegut the teacher. Here is pretty much everything Vonnegut ever said or wrote having to do with the writing art and craft, altogether a healing, a nourishing expedition.

The knowledge, insights, and anecdotes are great. The narration is absolutely horrendous. Like a primitive android doing a parody of a New England snob. Insane that this was released like this. But the content itself is mostly very good, particularly if you are familiar with Vonnegut’s work and interested in creative writing. I recommend getting a non-audio version to better enjoy the content.

Story
Can literature change our real world society? At its foundation, utopian and dystopian fiction asks a few seemingly simple questions aimed at doing just that. Who are we as a society? Who do we want to be? Who are we afraid we might become? When these questions are framed in the speculative versions of Heaven and Hell on earth, you won't find easy answers, but you will find tremendously insightful and often entertaining perspectives.

Excellent book, both on Recovery and on Zen practice
Reviewed: 01-14-23
One of the all time best books on Recovery. Mel Ash does a wonderful job of showing the overlap between the Twelve step program and Zen practice. With humor and compassion he guides the listener to let go and to accept, but also to be diligent and conscientious. He also weaves in Christian teachings and themes from literature to illustrate the universality of this simple (but not easy) spiritual message. The narration of this audiobook is also very good, making it compelling and easy to listen back again, to periodically refresh the lessons and integrate them into our practice of living. Thank you.

Faulkner strikes a perfect balance between advice, insight, and anecdote. Insightful, motivating, and generous. Highly recommended for writers who need a little reminder or boost. Thank you.

Story
Rainn Wilson’s memoir about growing up geeky and finally finding his place in comedy, faith, and life. For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone's favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Viewers of The Office fell in love with the character and grew to love the actor who played him even more. Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a best-selling book of the same name. He also started a hilarious Twitter feed (sample tweet: “I'm not on Facebook” is the new “I don't even own a TV”).

Enjoyable and insightful journey through Wilson’s personal journey in the arts, faith, and personal growth. At once humble and passionate, he recounts moments of embarrassment and triumph with equal measures of unflinching honesty and hilarious joy. He also does an excellent job of introducing and describing the Baha’i Faith (and integral part of his journey) without detracting from the entertainment of his acting career’s ups and downs, as well as his mission to add value and joy to the world. A great listen from a wonderful human. Thank you. Highly recommended.
