Story
After fighting a troll in a back alley, I found out the supernatural was real. Then I discovered I'm a dragon shifter. Soon after, I learned I'm also a mage. Turns out this combination is incredibly rare, and now everyone wants a piece of me. Being a dragon, there's only one thing I want to do: gather my hoard. Power. Magic. Women. Riches. It's all going to be mine.

Performance outstanding, Smut with a bit of Plot!
Reviewed: 03-12-25
I'm currently on book 3 but I wanted to talk about the series as a I'm at so far.
Firstly the performance: Christopher Boucher and Jessica Threet are my favorite narrators hands down and they are a big reason to listen to the series.
Next, the plot: I did a little checking to see where Dante King was when writing these and found it was over the course of 2021 and that is the end of th first half of books he's done so far (Starting in 2018 and already having 3 in 2025). The first two books are a bit of a rushed timeline as events are stated to be happening in at most two weeks. That means when the MC is pulled into the reality of his new world, he gets a bit of that annoying finger snap BAMF energy. The setting is modern times where all sorts of fantastical creatures are real and kept hidden from 'normies' and that world building is absolutely amazing. The only issue I have with the plot is the next section.
Finally the smut: This is like 92% smut. Make no mistake, I'm fine with smut, but where I'm coming to prefer smut being given its own chapter with no real plot points talked about (so I can enjoy or skip without missing anything important), after the MC starts into things at about chapter 3 or 4 of book 1, I don't think a single chapter doesn't focus more on it then plot. It is honestly overboard in my opinion. You finish an orgy scene, thinking we are moving into plot only for some one on one time because they have to wait for something or decide on something. If you are just here for it 1000% get these books, you'll just have small breaks of story in-between. For everyone else, don't give up on it because the story is still really worth it. I only gave story a 4 because when there is an 8hr book and it feels like 6 is smut I'm a little put off.
This is a great series for this genre and I do highly recommend it. Thank you Dante King. And especially thank you Christopher and Jessica.

An epic story from book 1 to 8!
Reviewed: 01-01-25
Written and preformed wonderfully, I had to pause with 7.5 hours left to give this warning. By book 8 you, the MC and his friends/enemies all realize the same thing: the MC over thinks things to what becomes a rather annoying degree, he and they call him out on it multiple times and then he instantly proceeds to do it again. I'm super pumped for plot to move forward but have to take minutes in breaks for him to re-realize things.
Read/listen to this series. Just be warned.

The local wolffolk mafia longs for their glory days, and their alluring don, Alessia Lionetti, wants a powerful enforcer to bring them back. That's Vince. This is his big break from his days as a hired thug. Working for the mafia has a short life expectancy, though. Especially in a world where the masquerade shattered long ago. Demons run banks, birdfolk ferry people across town, and the police possess crack teams of sorcerers to keep the peace. Bad news for Vince and his dreams of mafia wealth.

Well written, well preformed, all awesome. My first book by the author and performer and I am more than happy. K.D. Robertson has set a great foundation for the story, while a lot of the genre will state what the end goal of the series is they often have sub-goals that are obvious for the current book and are used as the wrap up, here I was pleasantly surprised when the big fight happened and I still had several hours of world/character/plot development happening. Stephanie Sevannah utilized a wide enough range that I not only didn't confuse characters but felt I had a pretty matched sense for how they were supposed to feel. Great job, I bought book 2 only an hour into book 1.

But I'm happy this wasn't the first series I read from Bruce. It fell into the trap of a little bit of story to get to the next erotica scene. MC is on a time crunch? No worries! Just have sex for half a day. For those who want more erotica in the books definitely read this as it is still engaging. At the least Bruce does wrap things up satisfactorily with the only questions being directly referenced as a possibility he could return to the series in the future.
Performance wise I think there was a lot of improvement over time from book 1 to the end here though there were still a few points where you can tell it was a different sitting for reading because the mic was set differently and a few times where tone didn't match the words.
Still this was a great series I'm happy to get all the way through.

I kept being distracted from the story because every female voice was almost exactly the same with little to no difference from emotions. A cry of pleasure was no different from a shout of anger or a solemn word.

Story
Ard is hunkering down in the mountains for the winter as the war cools with the snow. That means it’s time to practice his magic and stay out of trouble. Well… Ard might not be entirely proficient at the last one. At the very least, he’s staying away from the city and his penchant for annoying other people. Except that doesn’t work out so well when he’s forced to attend a ball held by the Brighthavens, though they’ll certainly regret forcing Ard’s attendance.

Ard's Oath is fantastically written and that is highlited amazingly by the performance. I keep catching myself smiling as the main cast interacts because the actors are so fluid in their delivery that it feels natural and doesn't become disjointed as it would if you read it. The points where they talk over each other or like there is food in the mouth makes it feel like real discussions. Bravo

Love the book overall but have the first thing that Bruce ever did that actually has me unhappy.
Reviewed: 11-08-24
This isn't the first series of Bruces I'm going through but this is the first time he's done something, in my opinion, that went so far out of everyone's characters. Even if it's barely knowing the character it was straight out of left field to 'accidentally' kill Leviathan and then all of them not only not caring but making light of it. It was so jarring I couldn't even finish the book before writing this. Just got to the part where the line 'I wanted to care more but I didn't know her very well.' Talk about messed up since they asked for the help/accepted the help. Considering that she went to his Court he had to know her better than the people of the city he was just defending.
My only other problem comes from the performance. Maybe it's cheating since I've basically listened to a book a day for the series but it bothers me when the voices of some characters were different. Maybe if it was just minor characters it wouldn't be a big deal but there were also some very prevalent characters that it happened with too.
This series has been fantastic and I would stand and defend against many who said it started going down in book 6. I think the ending was a waiver but I'll definitely go through the series again.
