About this listen

In a city where magic is as common as air, Vince receives an offer he can't refuse.

The local wolffolk mafia longs for their glory days, and their alluring don, Alessia Lionetti, wants a powerful enforcer to bring them back. That's Vince. This is his big break from his days as a hired thug.

Working for the mafia has a short life expectancy, though. Especially in a world where the masquerade shattered long ago. Demons run banks, birdfolk ferry people across town, and the police possess crack teams of sorcerers to keep the peace. Bad news for Vince and his dreams of mafia wealth.

Not to mention that the corrupt mayor is backing the mafia's rivals or that Vince's usual employer doesn't appreciate his moonlighting. Plus, the don's sister is a wild one.

Vince might not become a made man, but his future with the mob will make him or break him.

Dresden Files meets monstergirls meets Harem genre

This was a fantastic read, I enjoyed it so much I bought the audiobook to listen to. It's a really fun mix of urban fantasy, monstergirl harem romance and shadowrun.

Breakdown - World building - The world building in this first book is fantastic, it does a wonderful job of presenting a fascinating world where the masquerade is ended, and in this city, power rules. A city divided by various criminal syndicates, Vince finds himself a freelancer enforcer, (think magical mercenary) working a job for the local Italian Wolf girl mafia after the demons he usually works for cuts him free for a few weeks. The magic system, interesting, if a little simple, lends itself to some really cool action sequences that are a really good time to listen to. The system really lends itself to being just concrete enough to get away with some really cool fights.

Characterization - The characters in this story are all very well rounded and interesting, Vince himself is a likeable fellow that is easy to root for. Ronin, his best friend turned cop is cool, and while he only makes a few appearances, through inner dialog and the interactions between them, you really get a feel for their history as childhood best buds. Nina, Vince's lion girl room mate, is always a joy when she's on screen so to speak. Nikki, his harpy girl chauffeur is adorable, Pola and Fia, wolf girl mobsters are each well written and have great chemistry with the rest of the cast. And I think that's what really sells it for me, is the chemistry between all of the characters. Vince himself is kind of a breath of fresh air in a genre chock full of bland OP protagonists. While powerful, he isn't the biggest fish in the pond, and the author goes to great lengths to straddle the line of just strong enough to be interesting.

The Romance- This book is the first of currently 2 books (i do hope there are more), and as such sets up for the long game. the book mostly focuses on introducing these characters, and setting up their relationships, with a focus on some great chemistry between the cast. The one spicy scene of the story is well written, and feels earned by the time you get to it. A lot of the stories in this genre like to throw these scenes at you like popcorn, and like popcorn, its a tasty yet unsatisfying snack. The scene and its aftermath in Mob Sorcery however is a fancy steak dinner in comparison. Its probably my favorite thing about K.D Robertson as an author, he doesn't oversaturate his stories with a good thing, he paces the spice out, so the scenes feel natural to the progression of the story and the characters, as to the romances themselves, the groundwork is laid out really well, and i can't wait to explore these characters and their growing relationships together.

The Narration - Stephanie Savannah is a mainstay of the genre, While her narration style might take some time to get used to for some, She is a fantastic narrator, and she really brings these characters to life. The performance itself is lively, and she is incredibly well spoken. She is one of my favorite narrators for a reason.

Conclusion - a well written, character driven urban fantasy tale, with a great cast of characters, a fascinating world, and stellar narration. 100% Worth the credit and the time investment.

Phenomenal!

This is pretty much everything that I was looking for. An urban fantasy setting that plays to the world being more than a little different after they groups in hiding show themselves to humans. The characters don't feel stock and more like individuals as the MC makes his way through the story in what feels like anyway that he can as he looks to make enough to stay afloat. The unique magic and world that is built up is enjoyable to listen to and learn about.

Glad I took a chance.

Nina is my favorite. A lot of stuff happened in what 3 days? So much happened in that time. I've been looking for an author with good writing ability after catching up on all of Bruce Sentar's stuff. Well good to me at least, so I was sitting on this in my wish list for several weeks, wondering if I'd drop it, or finish it, or look for more works by this author. I'll be looking into more of his works.

The Narrator did good, haven't run into her until now. Maybe not my favorite but she's good.

Great Story Bad Acting

So I read the book and was looking forward to the audio. However, when I listened to it.... it just didn't feel right to have one narrator for the story, I felt like there should have been two different narrators male and female. It just didn't sound right and the characters didn't sound right. Like with Pola I feel like she should have been more whinny and high pitched in comparison to her sister who should have sounded more sophisticated. Honestly, across the board none of the characters sounded right.

good story and plot but..

the MC acts like a monk for 3/4 of this story. typical author bs, kicking the relationship progression can down the street as much as possible. no single straight man can constantly pass on that many advances from gorgeous women. at one point I started wondering if he was gay. he's not but he is a bottom. and everyone knows women love their man to be a bottom (insert eye roll). the mc should be more masculine (a man's man) not this woke moron MC that most of the authors in this genre write.
so many authors force a story in certain directions instead of writing it a way that the story flows more naturally.

loved it

this book had me hooked from the start, it is a pretty fast paced story that dives right into the underbelly of the city and its inner workings, it really fascinated me with the magic system and the use of the easily understood teir system

Very very good!

Great story. Writing is on point. Characters are good and kinda all fit KD’s previous works vibes.
Only complaint is that there is only one real romantic spice scene in the whole book. Now I don’t need erotica, but I like a sprinkle of the intimacy between characters throughout the book, not just once.
