Story
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Really interesting and normalizing a lot of things. I listened on 1.25 speed so the music was unbearable after awhile. Otherwise great!

Good story, too long

The narrator was great. The story is wonderful and could be told taking out about 1/3 of the repetition. It just dragged on too long. But otherwise I enjoyed it.

Male narrator ruined it
Reviewed: 04-17-24
I was so excited for this book as the first in the series was so good. But Kai in book 1 and Kai in book 2 are totally different. 1 is suave and debonair and 2 is pretentious and cloying. The “r’s” just take it over the edge. So disappointing and I hate to say he ruined it because he’s a human being and I don’t want to be mean but he ruined it for me.

Story
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

A great story buried in pages of repetition and boredom
Reviewed: 01-07-24
I liked the continuation of the story and thought the first half was pretty good. But then it was tedious with the same conversations happening on repeat. This could have been hours shorter and no plot would have been missed- it was just…boring. The whole lying/honesty storyline became just intolerable and juvenile. I sometimes had a hard time figuring out who was talking because the narrator didn’t distinguish voices that well, and I found the action scenes incredibly shouty. The first book was better. I’m not sure I can read the 3rd one. At this point I’m not sure I care what happens to the characters.

Story
Dr. Briana Ortiz’s life is seriously flatlining. Her divorce is just about finalized, her brother’s running out of time to find a kidney donor, and that promotion she wants? Oh, that’s probably going to the new man-doctor who’s already registering eighty-friggin’-seven on Briana’s “pain in my ass” scale. But just when all systems are set to hate, Dr. Jacob Maddox completely flips the game . . . by sending Briana a letter. And it’s a really good letter. Like the kind that proves that Jacob isn’t actually Satan.

This was a fun one! I did feel like the repetitive self doubt inner monologue dragged on for far too long -Maybe because I listened to it in 1 day. But with about 2 hours left I was getting irritated. But overall I enjoyed the humor and sincerity of the story.

Story
The world-renowned philosopher and author of the best-selling Justice explores the central question of our time: What has become of the common good? World-renowned philosopher Michael J. Sandel argues that to overcome the crises that are upending our world, we must rethink the attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalization and rising inequality. Sandel shows the hubris a meritocracy generates among the winners and the harsh judgment it imposes on those left behind, and traces the dire consequences across a wide swath of American life.

Great content, halting delivery
Reviewed: 04-14-23
This book is excellent, offering a full view of meritocracy and how both political parties have contributed. The author reads the book with streams of good inflection and then times there was a halting delivery that felt robotic. I think it’s ok to let professionals narrate. He also pronounces “elite” as “ay-leet” which is personally annoying. But the content is still excellent and the delivery wasn’t enough to make me stop listening.
