Started out being interesting but halfway through it began to drag. The obligatory sexual encounter was unnecessary. Story went downhill fast after that. Main characters not very appealing.

Delphine's parents had long since died in the Terror, but when she learned of their wishes for her, she believed it her duty to respect their wishes. Delphine would marry, but it would be a marriage in name only. But when Delphine saw Jules Saint-Pierre, she got the shock of her life: he was the same man she had seen juggling in the streets at a local fair.

Cecilia Bassingwaite is the ideal Victorian lady. She's also a thief. Like the other members of the Wisteria Society crime sorority, she flies around England drinking tea, blackmailing friends, and acquiring treasure by interesting means. Sure, she has a dark and traumatic past and an overbearing aunt, but all things considered, it's a pleasant existence. Until the men show up.

I had hoped for the lively, humorous novel mentioned in prior reviews. Instead, three chapters in, it was nothing more than a tedious recounting of sexual activities with a bit of plot thrown in. Well written and well narrated though the novel might be, it’s not what I was looking for.

Royal Escape is a tour de force both through Heyer’s skillful writing and Sam Woolf’s narration. It’s a remarkable journey to a time long past made even more real through Heyer’s attention to language as it was spoken and Woolf’s understanding of cadence and inflection. Each add drama and authenticity to the adventure.
