Story
Philadelphia, 1837. After Charlotte escaped from the crumbling White Oaks plantation down South, she’d expected freedom to feel different from her former life as an enslaved housemaid. After all, Philadelphia is supposed to be the birthplace of American liberty. Instead, she’s locked away playing servant to her white-passing father, as they both attempt to hide their identities from slavecatchers who would destroy their new lives.

Would they actually be friends?
Reviewed: 05-29-25
While the idea of Nell and Charlotte working towards abolition together, and defying their families to pursue it, I don't see that a young lady like Nell would be receptive or even seeking out the friendship of a woman of Charlotte's status. The story was well thought out and the arrival of Evie created another layer of anxiety for the women. (and me!) The author definitely did good research and is a talented writer.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

The grandmother was a bit of a wildcard but once she mentioned hiding something, I was on to her… poor Vince meant well, but he was so oblivious. Good story. Liked the different narrators.

Story
When ten-year-old Ebby Freeman heard the gunshot, time stopped. And when she saw her brother, Baz, lying on the floor surrounded by the shattered pieces of a centuries-old jar, life as Ebby knew it shattered as well. The crime was never solved—and because the Freemans were one of the only Black families in a particularly well-to-do enclave of New England—the case has had an enduring, voyeuristic pull for the public. The last thing the Freemans want is another media frenzy splashing their family across the papers, but when Ebby's high profile romance falls apart, that's exactly what they get.

Overthink much?
Reviewed: 03-27-25
The jar parts of the story were excellent. It was nice to have stories of an untouched section of enslaved people.
Adversely, the obsession of “being seen” that consumed Ebby so many years after her brother’s death was ridiculous. To think that 10-15 years later people are still thinking about her… became obnoxious.

When an immature woman loves a naive man… everybody gets hurt. It was a decent storyline but far from believable. I certainly appreciated the plot twist but it wasn’t developed enough. I definitely felt like the author was ready to be done with these characters. Me too, girl!

Boy, I miss E. Lynn Harris! And this was reminiscent of one of his first novels. It was a great story and well told from different perspectives. Multiple narrators would have made it better. The narrator didn’t have a great voice. Also, the story moved forward too quickly. It’s unbelievable that all the things could have transpired in a few weeks. Overall, it was decent.

It’s a virtue the country appears to have wholly lost its grip on, but one Darren sees as his salvation. They take Austin’s “Keep It Weird” vibe to heart, each leaning into their own unique talents and sense of style. And they’re both ready to go on to even bigger things. Is pushing past the boundaries of friendship into something deeper one of them? The red-hot fantasy is there…but so is real life.

Rushed with no Resolution
Reviewed: 08-09-24
How do you write a GLARING relationship problem and then gloss over it with no resolution? They moved on (and in) way too fast from something so significant. There wasn't enough conversation with friends and we never got to the root of a few issues. The writing was rushed and so many storylines opened and left hanging.
Also, the narrator pronounced so many words wrong, it became annoying.

When she was twenty-six and broke, Skye didn’t think twice before selling her eggs and happily pocketing the cash. Now approaching forty, Skye still moves through life entirely—and unrepentantly—on her own terms, living out of a suitcase and avoiding all manner of serious relationships. Maybe her junior high classmates weren’t wrong when they voted her “Most Likely to Be Single” instead of “Most Ride-or-Die Homie,” but at least she’s always been free to do as she pleases.

While I understand not spending a ton of money on a novella, all of the juicy parts of the story fell flat with the Virtual Voice narration. The story was good, in concept, but was rushed. Some of the concepts were extremely unrealistic. There was too much “sex as a resolution” rather than having the difficult conversations.
