So as the title says, I love Scott Brick but I have such a hard time listening to this version of the audiobook because it's not the version I like. My version of The Hunt for Red October is the original 80s recording by Frank Muller and as such I can't thoroughly enjoy any other version. That said, this is one of my favorite books of all time so I own it all the same. This book is such a good thriller and I feel like would make a great 10 part miniseries or like, 2-3 season limited series as it takes place over the course of a month unlike the movie which seems to take place over a weekend or a week or whatever. Love the movie, love the book, both for different reasons.

I've always loved this book it's one of my favorite Star wars books in general. several years ago I got the other version of this audiobook, The abridged version, that audible had it was the only version at the time that they had so I made do. few months ago I picked up this version and I was very happy to get a full unabridged version this is a superior version of the audiobook. this is how shatterpoint was meant to be heard. I don't know why Star wars books are always abridged it seems like but they need to really do more unabridged audiobooks

Operation Arctic Sting Audiobook By Robert G. Williscroft cover art

Having already read the book itself I was able to focus on the performance that Mister Bennett gives and I have to say it's excellent. Subtle inflections differentiate characters as much as accents do. One thing I especially love about the performance is... how do I say this, the humor in Mister Bennett's voice when the characters are amused feels real.

As before, the added sound effects and musical cues make a nice atmospheric addition to the experience. For instance when someone is speaking on a phone, usually a Gertrude (basically an underwater telephone), the modulation or distortion (I don't know quite how to describe it) makes you feel like it's a phone conversation rather than two people face to face.

As I state in my review of the book, I love this book. I think it's a must read, as are the two previous entries in the series, and I cannot wait for more from Mac. But I'll leave this review by saying this: without spoiling it, the ending is a real knock out!

This audiobook was provided to me for free by the Author, Doctor Robert G. Williscroft, in exchange for an honest review.

I feel I must begin this review by stating that I was not as enamored with Mister Bennett as narrator as I was Mister Budwill... but he grew on me, though I do still find I prefer Mister Budwill's performance more. Having now finished the audiobook, I can say that I do enjoy Mister Bennett's performance more than I initially did, and I believe that my initial problems came from having the characters sound different to how I was used to them sounding, as I had listened to Operation Ivy Bells at least 12 times before getting this one.

When I first contacted Doctor Williscroft about a review copy of this audiobook I was very very excited for it because I had bought and read through the book on day of release but I couldn't wait for the audiobook because the audio format always brings a new level of life to the story. I have to say that I was not let down one bit! This audiobook is extremely good and though I had a little trouble adapting to the change in narrator I soon began to recognize the characters as if I had simply listened to this book immediately after finishing Ivy Bells.

There are some parts of the story where the divers encounter marine life and while some are terrifying others are utterly adorable, and I mean to tell you they legitimately made me smile because of how cute they were. In particular there is an inquisitive Narwhale who meets the divers and it's even better in audio form.

The highest praise I can give this book and audiobook is that it stacks up well, in my humble opinion, to Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October which is one of my favorite books, audiobooks (the original 80s recording by Frank Muller) and movies of all time. Likewise I feel that the Mac McDowell missions would make excellent movies or TV Miniseries (each book getting its own series naturally)

Back to the audiobook, I found that the added sounds and musical cues that this audiobook had added a nice bit of immersive depth to it that Ivy Bells did not possess and though not necessary for good story-telling made for a nice little bit of depth.

I have already reviewed the book itself on amazon so I will finalize this review by saying: I recommend this audiobook, it's an excellent listen. Doctor Williscroft's personal knowledge as a man who did the types of things these men do, make him extremely qualified to write these stories and it really shines through, he also writes very believable and life-like characters.

Buy this book, enjoy the adventure and get set for the next book because it should be a real cooker! (Also check out Operation: Ivy Bells, the first book in the series, it is amazing as well)

This is a very good listen, wish it was longer. Both narrators were excellent and played their characters appropriately, B'Elanna even struggled with speaking the language correctly as, I believe, she wasn't fluent with it.

Hearing Tony again, it's been great. To say that I've missed him is an understatement. I've long wanted to read this book and as soon as I had the opportunity to get the audiobook with him narrating no less I snapped it right up! I Thoroughly lost myself in this book and am probably going to binge just about every piece of content he's made now... again, to keep that high going. This is a must read, or listen, for any Anthony Bourdain fan and once you have... you'll understand our late Chef a little better. Wherever you are, I hope you're at peace. Goodbye, Chef Tony.

Great book, want more. new narrator though please. This guy was meh through most of the book.

Updated 1/2/21: I was a little rash in my original review. Having taken the time to adjust to the narrator I have come to found that I really enjoy this narrator. There are some minor issues with pacing and pronunciation and whatnot but those are super-minor nitpicks. I can't wait for Operation Icebreaker's audiobook and I genuinely hope that Mister Budwell is the narrator again.
