Story
As an adult, Lauren Hough has had many identities: an airman in the US Air Force, a cable guy, a bouncer at a gay club. As a child, however, she had none. Growing up as a member of the infamous cult The Children of God, Hough had her own self robbed from her. The cult took her all over the globe - to Germany, Japan, Texas, Chile - but it wasn't until she finally left for good that Lauren understood she could have a life beyond "The Family."

Funny, witty, honest, relatable

I listened from beginning to end, sometimes with a lump in my throat, sometimes chuckling aloud. Hough's essays are poignant, darkly humorous, authentic, and vulnerable. Her words formed pictures in my mind and engaged my senses, leaving me with memories that remain after I've finished the book. Highly recommended.

Highly recommend this book! It's a horrifying and heartbreaking story, but it's told beautifully and authentically, with an honesty and vulnerability that draws you in and makes you feel that you are there. The narration is also perfection.

Jessica's story is heartbreaking, but written so honestly and beautifully. It's breathtaking and unforgettable. Her reading of the book is also incredibly moving and adds to the authenticity of your story. She's an outstandingly gifted writer and an immensely courageous survivor. Her story and recovery journey resonated with me on so many levels. Highly recommend this book!

Story
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Story
Behind the tall, foreboding gates of a commune in Brazil, Daniella Mestyanek Young was raised in the religious cult The Children of God, also known as The Family, as the daughter of high-ranking members. Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

Do not recommend the second half
Reviewed: 10-02-22
The first half of the book, about the author's cult experience, are worth reading. I'm so sorry for what the author went through and am proud of her for getting out.
The second half of the book, about the author's Army experience, I tried to listen to but was unable to finish. The islamophobia, racism, lesbophobia, xenophobia, and the glorification of US Army war crimes and atrocities is so consistent and blatant that I stopped listening. The people of Afghanistan were consistently portrayed as less valuable humans by the author; it frankly disgusted and disturbed me so much that I had to walk away as I felt physically ill. I respect the author's cult survivorship, but her undeniable dehumanization of the Afghans overshadowed her narrative for me. I had hoped that she would've deconstructed enough to see and remedy her army day views but the book only emphasized it and showed it as a present day view. I see no excuse for it.
The author also uses a slur against lesbians seven times in her book.
On the whole, the book had potential, especially the first half, but was very disappointing and off-putting, and frankly angering, in the second half. I also felt the book on the whole lacked "soul" as compared to books like Educated.

Story
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.
