Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Timeless Stories
Reviewed: 01-10-25
Aside from his pronunciations of some of the names of things, places, or people, it's always fun and interesting to hear or read these most important, necessary, and timeless stories told in a slightly different way. Our tradition of telling these stories must never die and we must make an effort to listen and learn of others renditions so that we may tell our own to keep the tradition, lessons, and spirits alive for years to come.

Read It Yourself
Reviewed: 10-29-24
Buy the book and read it yourself. It seems like it could be a good story but the author cannot read stories well. There was no real conviction of what he was reading and there was no effort in differentiation between characters voices. There were also too many similar elements from "Chop Wood Carry Water", that it didn't completely feel like a different story. I'm not sure if that was by design to reference a callback or trying to be clever but I was not a fan of that. And this is personal preference, his voice is really annoying. Very high pitched and nasally, and he kept doing this awkward breathy laugh a lot. I don't personally identify with basketball, and the character Jason, was also cringe to follow. I'm sorry if a lot of people liked this story.

Great information and deeper delve into the intricacies of seduction. The reader tried to deliver it in a "seductive" manner but...alas it was a little more annoying than helpful. Still, Great book overall.

Everything about this book was well done. I thoroughly enjoyed the simplicity of each law, and the breakdown (transgression, reversal, keys to power) and how it applied to history as well as other related stories.

The narrator is a joy to listen to with his various voices and emotion put into each character, each line, each chapter. Since reading this book some years ago, and finding this audio book shortly after I have, without fail, listened to it every year and have gleaned something new and useful from it. This is has become one of my favorite books to read and listen to and I look forward to it, every year.

Story
The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.

Lots of great information well laid out and well written. Some of it is new to me and some of it poses questions in a new way or with new information. Thoroughly enoyed it. The only thing I really did not like was the involvement of pure speculation in that the "Vikings" may have entertained multiple genders and cross dressing?! Nope, sorry. Drawing these kinds of conclusions from a non historical basis is irrelevant, but that's about it.
